Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs D60?

I have a trip to South Africa coming up, and thought it was finally time to make a change. So, this past Friday I took my modest budget and my first generation Canon EOS Rebel 6.3mp camera and lenses, to my well-respected neighborhood camera store, and they showed me some pre-owned options. I narrowed it down to the T6 and the D60.

I was immediately taken with the D60, particularly the articulated LCD. But, the rep recommended the T6 because it is only 3 years old vs 9 years for the D60, indicating 6 years of improvements in sensors etc. Also, this particular one only had 2336 clicks on it, making it nearly new. I took his advice, and bought it and have been having fun learning about it.

But, now, I am having buyers remorse. I ran a comparison search and found that the sensor generation in the D60 is only nominally back level from the T6. But, the D60 was a much higher level camera with some key features worth considering (see below).

What should I do?  Keep the much newer camera with (assumedly) fewer clicks and a newer/more up to date sensor?  or go to the older camera with the rep for being more high end, with faster shutter speed, faster fps, better battery life for still shots, environmental sealing and other features?

Thanks!

Re: Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs D60?

I assume you mean the 60D and not the D60. The D60 dates from about 2002 with a 6mp sensor per my search.

The 60d and the T6 share essentially the same sensor/electronics and image quality. Canon repackaged that 18mp sensor over many years. The D60 is a more robust machine with more features you may or may never use. JPEG algorithms may differ between the cameras.

The articulating screen is of great use if you plan to shoot video snapshots outdoors as reflections can be minimized. However the 60D viewfinder is listed as a pentaprism so that difference is significant as well. Your call.

Both cameras are based on what is serviceable but very old technology in digital terms. You will probably be happier with the T6 overall if you are not an advanced shooter. I believe it is lighter to carry around as well. Particularly if you learn to shoot and process raw images there is little you can not do with the T6 that you could not do with a more "advanced" camera if you learn the controls.

If the price is in your range I would not have buyer's remorse.

Re: Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs D60? You mean 60D?

The Canon 60D is a much better choice than the Canon T6 camera in my opinion.  The Canon T6 does not have sensor dust protection.  For that reason alone, I would never buy a Canon T6.

If you are in the US then also check out the Canon Refurbished web site to see if they have any bodies in your price range. One advantage is that they come with a one year Canon warranty. I have bought several things from them and never had any problems.

Be sure to really give your camera a good workout before your trip to learn the how to use it and find any possible problems. Also take your old body as a backup, Getting a new camera right before a big trip and then having problem is a classic cause of problems.

Re: Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs D60?

The 60D is indeed the more capable camera (of the 2), though both pale in comparison to something like the T7i.

Use a single AF point and shoot bursts.

Have fun!

Re: Canon EOS Rebel T6 vs D60?

Thanks to everyone who responded! All your feedback has been very helpful.

I originally went with my camera shop’s recommendation of the T6 over the 60D because  it was the notably newer of the two in production timeframe  (2016 vs 2010) and in physical age (Physically new condition, and only 2336 lifetime clicks).  They were asking $199 For the 60D and $249 for the T6.

I realize that spec-wise I left some camera on the table.   The benefit was walking away with something significantly newer, which would  have more life left in it, and also be more eligible for repair by Canon, if needed.

Also, keep in mind, I am coming from a 2002/2003 first generation Canon EOS rebel 6.3 megapixel.  After discounts and a trade in lens, I paid $169 including tax, for the body and a Tamron 18mm-270mm lens with vibration control.   So I have less than $200 invested.

I am upgrading to some 1800 MAH batteries, so I should see more comparable shots per charge as related to the 60D.

I know the faster shutter speed and 5 fps burst was a   Compromise, but I hope to spend the next several weeks getting better at the manual photography, and I think I’ll be able to make up for it to some degree as I learn more about setting my own shutter speed And F -stops.

Any pointers to that extent that would be helpful.

Thank you all again!
