I think I`ve discovered why the G9 has satisfied me so much
12

When I held the G9 in the store and as I have said on other threads it was just the right camera for me. After a month or so I now realise why the G9 is so attractive to me. The staff member talked me into buying the kit with the PL 12-60, (he was a G9 user BTW) I got the double cashback. Now I realise apart from the camera fitting my hand so well part of the enjoyment is the PL 12-60. I have many Fuji lenses but this focal length and 2.8-4 is really a do almost everything (24-120 equi) is such a lovely range and the IQ from that lens really is top notch. It`s competing with my Fuji primes for IQ, it`s fairly compact as well. I can`t remember a Fuji lens with that focal range (helped obviously by the 2x focal length on the MFT1s sensor.) I really think they got it right with this lens, it`s wide enough for most things and has enough reach at the long end for a hell of a lot of photography. I used to use my old G7 mainly for video work with the 12-35 on most of the time and was many times short on the long end, I never considered the PL12-60 at that time but it would have really made that G7 into a better camera ( I must get round to trying that lens on the G7 when I get a minute)

So, I would urge anyone coming into MFT and Panasonic to make sure you try the PL12-60 lens, not a cheap lens but they really do make a great pair but at least now I can stop wondering why I fell in love with the G9, it wasn`t just the body but that combo with the lens that was completing the package.

As we say in the UK " it`s the answer to a maidens prayer" for me.

I'm surprised more camera/lens makers don't have a 24-120, and m43 has a premium and economy version.  Then again, I remember getting into a debate with a photographer years ago who thought 24-120 was a useless lens.  It's amazing how many photographers can't see beyond their own preferences.

A good lens that suits your preferences always makes you appreciate your camera much better than a not so good lens that's supposed to suit your preferences, a good lens that doesn't suit your preferences, or especially a not so good lens that doesn't suit your preferences.

G9 is so boring. I'm all for the G10. Or actually the G11. Now thats an attenuator.

I got my G9 with the 12-60mm F3.5-5.6, l've seen direct comparisons with the F2.8-F4 version and whilst it has some advantages such as the obvious faster maximum aperture, the budget version is also an excellent choice. In terms of performance l could not justify the additional cost of the premium version for my use. That's not to say anyone should dismiss the premium lens, it's more a case of both are excellent performers and neither will disappoint, it just depends on what you need. I may upgrade at a later date but for now l'm extremely satisfied with the cheaper version, its a stellar performer for the price.

How funny. I got the G9 because I wanted the pl12-60 in the first place.

I ended up buying a second hand kit.

Having the 12-40 pro my requirements were quite high.

The extra range really makes my day and the pl image quality is indeed very good, albeit I am not sure it matches Oly 12-40 pro on the 12-40 range.

As for the G9, i really love its features set and great handling.

The attraction to multiple focal lengths all in one lens gets us all excited but of course there are limits. I seriously think the 24-120 is just about at the edges of the limit, mine has superb IQ at both ends (yeh, if you pixel peep then primes are better but youd need several to cover that range.) I have always loved focal lengths between 20/24- 100/135 so this lens really does hit the button for me. Don`t get me wrong, if the IQ wasn`t top notch then it wouldn`t ring all the bells and I would rather change lenses when required but luckily it does the job nicely. In fact, without going back over years of images I think this zoom is as good as my best ever owned and better than 90% of them.

Thanks for your reply

That's the key point, being satisfied with your gear and as lots of people forget (inc me at times) the content of an image means everything. I don`t think it`s just the f2.8 that relates to the price difference, I`m quite a fussy person where lenses are concerned and my fairly large stock of Fuji gear is just sitting there because of this set up. I had the Canon 135 f2 and the renowned Canon 85 1.8 before mirrorless and I would put this lens up against them anytime.( apart from the narrow DOF obtainable )

Thanks for coming back to me

Re: I think I`ve discovered why the G9 has satisfied me so much

I can’t seem to pinpoint it as a single reason why the G9 has me so satisfied. It’s pretty much everything about the camera that has me satisfied. Every lens I have used with it, even my old Minolta film lenses seem to produce extremely beautiful images in combination with my G9. The skin tones, the colors, the amount of detail in the shadows and especially in the highlights. It’s just blown me away. The viewfinder is absolutely perfect and so is the grip and button placement. I’ve never used a viewfinder in any other camera as much as I have with the G9. Such a fun camera to use for so many reasons.

I see where you’re coming from. I put in an order recently for the Oly 12-100 f4 for similar reasons that you enjoy the 12-60. Can’t wait for it to arrive!
