T2I, is it's image quality still acceptable?

I still use my T2I and find it does a very good job. Is there a reason for me to upgrade?

Sounds like your T2I is just fine, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm still using my 1100D

I'm still using my Canon T2i (550D) camera. The image quality is acceptable with enough available light. One reason to upgrade for me, is to get better photos under dark and rainy conditions. At the same time, I'm using a Canon T7i (800D) camera. With the newer camera the autofocus and exposure seems better. I also like to have the extra pixels when cropping. See my latest photos in the Show Your Snaps thread in which I use both cameras.

Mine started having AF issues but those began appearing after being subjected to several high humidity/heat exposure episodes. So that was the only reason I upgraded...to the T3i. ;-) Found a good low shutter count used one and it seems adequate as seen below.

I upgraded from a t3i to a 77D about six months ago mainly because I wanted some of the newer features like the better focusing, better burst mode, etc but you can read about those in the reviews.

As for as the image quality I can notice a fairly dramatic improvement in the noise at higher ISOs and at least to my eyes I can barely see any noise at ISO 800 even when I compare and ISO 100 and 800 picture side by side. Even at ISO1600 the noise is pretty minor.

At least for my old T3i at ISO 100 or 200 the images seem pretty similar(to me at least) as the 77D except that the 77D has more megapixels but unless you are doing a lot of cropping or printing very large images that is barely noticable.

I bought a refurbished 77D on the Canon Refurbished web site and it came with a 18-55 IS STM kit lens for just little bit more. (The deals on that web site change fairly often and I got a good pre-Christmas sale) That lens is probably two generations ahead of the 18-55 that came with my t3i and it seems to also take sharper pictures but that is less dramatic than the ISO improvements.

I sold my T3i with the older lens so getting the newer STM kit lens may make sense if you are going to sell your T2i since it will sell better with a lens.

One thing that I was not expecting is that I really like the touch screen and I am using it a lot more than I would have thought.

I remember fondly of my Canon T2i, it was my last Canon DSLR. The IQ is still competitive in 2019, in fact, you don't notice much advantage moving up to the newer 24mp Canon sensor from 18mp.

If IQ is important to you, then I would switch to Sony / Fuji / Nikon with that uses a Sony made 24mp BSi sensor. Sony Bsi sensor provide a noticeable improvement over Canon 18mp/24mp in Dynamic Range and offer superior high iso3200/6400 performace that plagues the canons sensor.

In either case, I would KEEP the T2i as it doesn't worth much in the used market anyways.

Peter, you wrote that the superior high ISO3200/6400 performance plagues the Canon sensor. Do those other brand cameras (within the same price range) do better than these at ISO5000 and ISO8000? I'm amazed how spectacular my Canon T7i (800D) camera does while it is dark and raining at high ISO with a kit lens.

Here's one example at ISO5000 while we had rain a short while ago. I took many of these under an umbrella.

Here's one at ISO8000. It was still raining a little bit.
