SeaFrog case and longer focal length focusing question.

Hi Underwater Forum,

Im looking at a Sony FE 85mm lens for mostly above water photography (surfing mainly) and wondering if focus becomes an issue at the longer focal length with the use of the Seafrog cases.

I tried to use Digipac and everything is completely soft it's unusable. I think its mainly because the lens doesn't sit flush with the port but I'm wondering if you get the same issues generally with a dome port or is it a non issue?

Thank you in advance

Hi DH007,

there is little or no use of 85mm lens which closest focusing distance is 0,8 m. There is a lot of use for 85 mm macro though. You can try with close up lens or two but that's quite like buying a better suspension when your tyres are flat.

He's talking about surfing though - I doubt the 80cm minimum focus distance is a big limitation when shooting surfers.

The dimensions of 85mm f/1.8 are pretty close to those of 28-70mm, so it should fit into the same port. A dome is not needed when shooting a long lens, especially topside, plus they are cumbersome and very easy to scratch.

That said, a fixed 85mm focal length may be quite limiting when shooting something as dynamic as surfing - SeaFrogs has a port and zoom gear for 55-210mm lens; that could be a better fit.
