Error message. Lens or body?

I have a canon t4i body and tamron zoom lens. I keep getting this error. I tried cleaning the contacts with a small pencil eraser on both body and lens and it keeps intermittently coming up. Any ideas?

Common error message when you have a broken flexible cable within the lens, the fact that it is intermittent also suggests a cable fault.

By the way, a pencil eraser is the wrong thing to use on the contacts, it is too abrasive and can damage the gold plating, only a soft cloth should be used.

If I turn   it off and then  just twist the lens back and forth on the mount once and turn it back on the error clears. Still think it’s the cable?

Yes.

Do you have another lens to try on the camera?  If it happens with other lenses then it may be the body.

I do. The problem is it is so intermittent it will be hard to tell. Sometimes it works fine for a while.
