What is similar to GH4/5 and Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8?

Hi,

Just had this camera and lens stolen in Boston. For replacement I am trying to figure out what is similar in quality or somewhat better for not much more. Insurance company will pay me to replace with a similar kit.

I remember when I bought the camera the discussions of quality often centered on high noise. I did observe that with this camera. I used it mostly for indoor and outdoor music videos. Something better in low light would be great and something that can go a bit wider and closer, but all in all I thought it was a great camera and lens. Maybe bokeh wasn't so great with the lens but I suppose that is more a result of MFT and the technical requirements to get great bokeh in MFT.

And while I use the camera mostly for video, would be really nice if there is something that takes better photos. The GH4 just couldn't compare to a Nikon D90 that I previously had. But again, that is just a nice to have, but not a requirement since I really need video features and quality to be stellar.

Hope to hear from someone,

thanks, Brian

And meant to add: a camera with nice in body video stabilization would be awesome...

The G9 and E-M1 mkii have the best dynamic range in the M43 system.

And if you add traces for Sony A6500, Nikon Z6(DX) and Nikon 859(DX) you will se something eye opening as well.

Gh5 is a very decent stills camera, but it is a great video camera. If video is your bread and butter go with the Gh5. You've got to go 5 to 7K for better video. Olympus video is still very far behind in technical quality and real bit rates.

Thanks for the comments. Right now I think I am leaning towards GH5, and noticed it has IBIS which will come in handy.

Thoughts on a good all purpose lens? Is there anything that gets lower than f2.8 across usable close and wide ranges that doesn't cost thousands?

thanks,

Brian

If low light performance is an issue then the GH5s springs to mind.  You do lose IBIS (compared to the GH5) and you mention photos so you would be dealing with only 12MP.

It's an interesting camera but I think for most the GH5 is a more rounded option.

True. However, at the moment, in my country, GH5 is 1300€ and GH5s is 2700€ (G90 is also more expensive than G9 at the moment).

About the lenses, there are many affordable f/1.7 f/1.8, f/2 options with AF available and dozens of fast manual focus primes. For anything faster than f/2.8 zooms, adapters need to be used. Sigma f/1.8 APS-C lenses with a smart focal reducer makes f/1.2 zooms with auto-focus possible.
