diy lens hood

I made a makeshift lens hood for my 400mm telephoto lens this weekend.  The lens has a built in hood, but it isn't very long.  I used corrugated cardboard with the corrugations running parallel to the  line of sight.  Other than being well cardboard, it worked really well.

I want a more permanent solution.  That doesn't look so ugly.  I am thinking about getting a piece of camouflage neoprene(this way I can make matching covers, and maybe reinforcing it a little bit.  I am stuck on what to reinforce it with, other than basically just using cardboard itself.  The card board was nice, because it would roll up

I made one using black craft foam which rolled up nicely but was really a bit small for the mirror lens I made it for, and then the velcro came unstuck...

perhaps I'll have another go sometime.

foam is good idea, maybe it needs to be cloth backed for sewing:

Re: diy lens hood

Thanks that is interesting, for long telephotos the shape isn't as important though.  I wasn't anywhere near vignetting with a 16" hood.  I might try it on other lenses.

I ended up making one out of 1/8 in neoprene camouflage, with a lining of a fiber based dining placemat from the dollar store, with some Velcro and a strapped clip.  Works out pretty well, light and flexible.  I also made a neoprene lens cover for my mirror lens.

It cleans up the light very much, but I wonder about the light falloff.  Is that vignetting, or just natural light fall off I didn't notice before.

Re: diy lens hood

buy a neoprene/memory foam cup holder from dollar tree if you have that sure in your area. Already well put together and collapsable for travel. They have camo prints as well.

I use them for snoots on speedlites

Just incase you need any more, i see that you found a solution months ago

Your post would be MUCH more interesting if you disclosed what you used...
