We need an SL3 Pro!
4

I bought an SL1 years ago as a go-anywhere body to supplement my kit. It was relatively small compared to my 5D and 7D, but very capable and flexible.

I looked forward to replacing it with the SL2, but that body was bigger AND did not have the extra features I wanted. Now, with the Sl3, they've simplified the body even more.

I guess I could consider mirrorless, but I liked being able to use my existing lenses without the need for a bulky adapter.

It would be great if Canon could release an SL3 with more flexible controls (and maybe more fast focus points - but that might be asking for too much).

I completely agree.  I was totally hoping an SL3 would move upmarket a bit more.

However, I have been looking at the 77D to fill this role. It isn’t too much bigger or heavier and has all the external controls I want on my “daily driver”.

I still have my SL1 and, yes, it is perhaps the smallest DSLR I have ever had.

My SL2 is slightly bigger, but I find its size + functionality useful for certain situations. I use the touch LCD quite often to compose and capture.

If you looked past the tiny size of the SL1 and considered that you were looking for a smaller/lighter camera with reduced functionality, these would be your choices:

Canon SL2

Canon T7s

Canon 77D

Canon M50 with EF mount adapter

we already have ONE, its call Canon 77D

Have you not check out a Canon 77D.  It's a great combination of Small Size with Great Erogonomic of 70d/80D camera.  It is the best of the both world.  I'm quite impressed.... My only negative is that Canon sensor is still rather noisy comparing aginast a 5yrs old Sony A6000.

If SIZE is that important, perhaps a Mirrorless is an option.  A Canon M50 is basically an even smaller / lighter SL2.

Hey Jeff,  I agree ! I just received my SL3 and my disappointment is: NO SOLUTION DISC to post process raw photo files, came with a new kit !!  How does one process raw files to view them from this SL3 camera ?? ( PLEASE..simple answer if one knows?).. The jpeg photos are good to great ( in my mind). See the jpegs photos with out pp and crop photo with pp)..We/I probably have to wait till Canon issues one or a third party also issues a new revision ( like adobe Elements 19 or 20?).

Re: We need an SL3 Pro!

HI Jeff,  Okay, some real photos from my SL3..It has a Canon EFS 18-135 IS USM lens on it.  Three photos at different setting (18mm, 35mm & 135mm).  The small bright yellow center of photo was the focus pt. all hand held photograph.  Please review photos at full size.

Carry my 5D Mark IV for a week

You’ll find the 80D super-small and lightweight after a week with a 5D.

I use 5D Mark III, 7D, 50D, 6D Mark II, 80D, SL2 and SL1.

Their relative sizes and weights decrease in the order listed.

The 80D is not super-small and lightweight -- even after a week with the 5D Mark III.

The SL2 is very small. The SL1 is tiny.

I went to the sales guy and said, "I want a small and light DSLR that has roughly the same functionality as the 80D." The guy replied, "Here, buy this 80D. I will throw my 5D Mark IV into the deal. Every time, before you actually use the super-small and lightweight 80D, just carry my 5D for a few days."

+1 It would indeed have been awesome if Canon had built (a lot) more capability into the new SL3.  IMHO an SL3 of such high caliber would become an instant classic!  Much sought after by the leagues of folks who still prefer/need the functionality of an (OVF) DSLR, in such a nice and small (yet very capable) package.

Alas, I get the feeling however that this will be the last iteration of this dying breed.  A missed chance for greatness indeed.

Re: Carry my 5D Mark IV for a week

My main body is a 5D Mark IV - and when using it seriously, I'll have it in a sling bag with a 70-200 f2.8L IS and several other non-EF-S lenses. Althought I admit that I recently bought the 70-300 "Nano" for times when I don't need the extra speed of the f2.8.

But the SL1 is my travel body, for when the full frame is bigger and heavier than I can easily take on the trip. I'll typically carry it with the 18-135 STM and a 50mm STM.
