My 550d locks up when I press the shutter!

I took my 550d to the zoo today and it failed.

When I press the shutter, it sounds like it is taking a picture but then freezes, even on a short exposure like 1/500th. When it freezes, none of the buttons or dials work. If I turn it off the display stays on.

I have to pull the battery to get out of this stare. When I put the battery back in and turn on, it make a sound like maybe the shutter is opening?

This lockup happens every shot.

Any ideas what is going on?

Sounds like you might have mirror lockup selected in the menu. This will require a second press of the shutter to complete the picture capture. See page 106 in the manual.

This was the issue. I had been playing with this feature and forgot about it between the last time and this one. At least I had another camera with me and it was mirror less!

Thanks for the help. I love this forum!
