400D ERR99 with new lens.

Dear All

I got a cheap sigma 70-210 lens off ebay. Really nice and compact. However when I take a photo I get ERR99 and a message to turn off camera. This does not happen with any other lens I have but it happens when I put on the sigma. It was purchased as an EF fit. I have looked on youtube for a fix. Answer was clean lens contacts carefully with a pencil rubber. This had no effect.  Is the lens faulty or is it not compatible. Thanks for help. CAC.

Probably not compatible, a lot of the older Sigma lenses worked with Canon EF mount film cameras but Canon changed things a bit when they made digital cameras and although the old Canon lenses still work the early Sigma ones don't.

Many years ago Sigma would re-chip these lenses to make them compatible to the new standards but they no longer offer that service.

After testing on various settings it looks like the camera will not communicate with the lens to close the aperture. It will work on fully open and manual on the camera but otherwise err99 . I take it it’s not compatible ? Cac

Yes, that's the typical behavior of the old non-compatible Sigma lenses.

Generally, Sigma lenses designed/made prior to 2002 have this incompatibility with Canon EOS bodies released 2002 and later, both film and digital. Older models "DL" or no "D-" designation are often incompatible.  Sigma lenses with "DG" or "DC" are later models for digital that are better reverse engineered and should be fine.
