SX710 vs G9 X Mark II

I've had the SX260 HS for about 7 years and it's been a pleasure to own. Great pictures, somewhat pocketable, really nice P&S camera. The 20x zoom is nice but after my extensive use of this camera, 20x is not a "must have". As far as value, this piece of equipment owes me nothing!! I do my processing in Lightroom Classic and have been satisfied with the results in working with jpeg files. primarily, I shoot landscape, travel, candids, occasional wildlife, and street scenes. Image quality is at the top of my list for attributes. WiFi & GPS are in the "nice to have" category for me. Low light performance, start up speed and ease of use are in the "need to have" category. Video is nice but not a priority. My previous workhorse was a DSLR and enough can't be said for working with RAW. Not a "must have", tho.

I've decide to replace the SZ260 HS with either the 701 or GX II. Suggestions/comments/experiences are welcome. Thanks in advance for your comments and observations.

Re: SX710 vs G9 X Mark II

I own the SX710 (as a replacement for the SX700, which I honestly preferred), and am very satisfied with its performance. The IQ at shorter focal lengths is perfectly good, and the high zoom can still be sharp under the right conditions.

Full disclosure, though: on longer trips, I always pair the 710 with the S120 for its sharper lens, HDR function and option to use a 3rd-party polarizing filter. Since its nominal successor is the G9X, that may change the equation here...

Re: SX710 vs G9 X Mark II

I own the sx730 and g9xII and IMO no reason to mess with sx710 when you can now buy a sx740 (or a sx730 for $200 for a refurb).

The reason to get a sx730/740 is for the crazy long zoom. It will not give good low light performance and will not give you as good image quality as the g9xII or g7xII.  These 1/2.3" cameras really need good light.

The reason to get the g9xII is for extremely light and thin while still having excellent 1" sensor. It's fun to use just cuz it's so tiny and light and has snappy performance.

The reason to get a g7xII over a g9xII (I know you didn't mention G7xII ) is for excellent manual controls and a bit better lens and a few other features. It will give surprisingly good low light performance. Image quality is very similar to g9xII but you can do a lot more with g7xII. Also note that g7xII max aperture is much better as you zoom in than g9xii and focal range is wider. Things you are used to doing with a DSLR -like ultra close macro shooting just to name something- you can still do with g7xII. So u probably won't feel as tied down as to what you can do compared to DSLR. G9xII is more limited in this regard.

Sale prices for a refurb g7xII (my recommendation) on Canon's website range from $429-$480 depending on the day you check the website. Main drawback of g7xII is bulkier (about the same size as sx730) and much heavier than g9xII. U can go to best buy or similar to handhold in person to compare if u like.

Some low light g7xII concert example threads from other posters FYI:

I use g7xII + plus sx730 as my travel combo. G7xII gives excellent IQ from wide to short tele and lots of manual controls. sx730 will reach out and get anything you want due to 960mm Equivalent reach. Here are a couple g7xII macro (first shot is tiny heather flowers) shots. Crocus was about the size of a dime in diameter.

Some sx730 shots (notice strong light in most of these). All are handheld except for Jupiter moons and Saturn:
