Wanted to ask about studio space
1

I know this isn't exactly DIY appropriate but I wasn't sure where else to ask.

So I'm looking at getting my own studio, and wanted to get advice on where to look. I've looked at warehouses, but they're remarkably expensive. I'm not sure of the legalities of running one out of an apartment. I've looked at flex office space, but nowhere is quite big enough. Is there something I'm missing. I do NOT want to do the typical small garage studio, as i need space. Am I just SOL unless I want to drop thousands per month on something?

To put it into perspective, I do creative fashion photography and am looking for a place to experiment. DMV area if that helps.

Have you considered sharing or renting space with/ from another photographer? Many years ago when I was shooting professionally I shared space with another photographer and it worked out VERY WELL. There are a few advantages to such an arrangement. First is that rent and utilities were shared so neither of us had to bear the full brunt of it. Second, was that between us we were able to create a “go to” pool of assistants and stylists. We had the ability to share equipment when necessary and finally, we expanded our network of graphic designers and art directors in the city -- very helpful when growing your business.

A couple of things that made this relationship successful was first and foremost that we liked each other and got along very well. We trusted and respected each other’s opinions and critiques. Almost as important was that we did not compete against each other for business. He shot fashion and I shot food and table to product.

Hows the studio search going? I would start in your apt just so you know your able to maintain the monthly charges for over head. Other than that you will have to look up art studio spaces for rent, which are usually cheap. you can get a space from 250sq ft for $200 - or even in some places 500 soft for $200.
