2 Month Review of the Canon RP (Pictures Inside)
15

Hello DPR, I am just getting back into photography after a 10-year hiatus. Previously, I shot with a Canon 5D Mark II that I remember purchasing for $2300. Being used to the type of images FF can provide, I knew I wanted another FF camera but did not want to pay the high price tag again if I could avoid it.

Although there is heavy criticism of the RP due to the exclusion of certain video features, short battery life, lack of DR, etc., this did not blind me from seeing the RP for what it is. A great FF camera for $1300.

The results have absolutely blown me away.

Here are some of the pictures I've taken with the RP the last 2 months:

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Canon EOS RP Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM Macro Sigma 135mm F1.8 Art Tamron SP 70-200 F2.8 G2

Indeed very nice pictures. You say that you were “blown away” by this camera. However, the quality of the pictures is determined by three factors; the quality of the camera, the lens and the persons who is in charge. I am still in doubt how big the camera factor has been in this series of pictures.

It doesn't have seemed to have held him back!     I think that's his point.

As someone else who still shoots with a 5Dm2 (although less and less), I find little to fault with the IQ of any new FF offerings.

How well does the 135 work with the RF adapter and the RP?

Flawlessly. I was nervous about using both the Sigma 135 ART and Tamron 70-200 G2 as both brands are known for some copies' AF being inconsistent, requiring microadjustment with their respective tap-in consoles.

However, I have not needed to adjust either whatsoever and focus has been both fast and accurate, even in very low-light situations

Note: I used the RP's Eye AF for many of my portraits and its been a great experience.

I think that's just it. A camera is as good as its end result. If the shooter shows you a pic and you don't know which camera it was taken by, you can only judge the photo on it's own merit. It's more for the user to voice his or her satisfaction or lack thereof with any one camera.

I agree.

Photography is about problem solving not about gear. Especially these days, all the cameras are so good.

The camera seems to work fine!  I appreciate your posting pictures.  In another thread someone claimed the RP produces horrible, offensive color, but couldn't be bothered to post any examples.

Yes...I saw that thread and though it strange.

We have a post with images and they are great.  Then we have someone claiming to have problems but no photos.

I'll take the word of the person with the photos.

All fantastic images. I see you are using either strobes or off camera speedlites. This is the only thing thing has stopped me from investing in the EOS R or RP as a second body for my wedding photography. how have the results been (apart from the obvious) with the EVF. Any delays in wireless triggering your flashes. How about the exposures from the flash and looking through the EVF. All reliable? Good enough for event photography in your opinion?

Marvelous shots man!

P.S So tired of focus inaccuracies even from my 5D IV  that I would jump to mirrorless simply for that man.....Love my 135 f/2 but I find it is not as accurate as I would want on my 5D IV other than with center focus point or live view and I don't always want to shoot live view even if that function on the 5D IV is great.....

thanks for any feedback you may have.

Great pictures.

the only drawback of this RP is the bokeh issue above 1/1600.

As I recognise on the dome of the last shot, or with the girl at the swimming pool.

I have studied it longly on the R and it is distracting to my eyes.

Apart from this, seems to be a good camera for the price
