THE EOS RP ROCKS !
16

Hi all, just sharing a short and brief review of my RP.

Few weeks ago I sold my 6Dii and EF 24-105L, and since 2 weeks I'm the happy owner of the RP+RF 24-105L

I know we have countless reviews on the net about all the technical specs (including the number of card slots) but I wanted to focus more on my user experience.

I'm no pro - just an enthusiast. So please read my review as a review for enthusiasts.

Unboxing:

- Its a bit painful to have to wait for many hours for the battery to charge .. in that sense I much prefer unboxing the new iPhone camera, which at least comes pre-charged ..

- Its great to see that the whole setup of the camera - using the intuitive touch screen and some of the buttons can be done without wasting time reading the 200 page manual. All is well structured, easy to understand and intuitive.

The camera produces very nice images and has plenty of control options. Most likely more than I can and will ever use.

User experience - and this is why, in my view, this is one bad-ass camera that ROCKS !

Ergonomics:

My previous camera was a 6Dii, and before that I had this 1100D APS camera. You could either use view finder or live view... and both were slightly different (autofocus, the layout of the screen, etc ) I never thought of this before - but with mirrorless it is a seamless transition: the same AF lints you can see through the viewfinder - you see on the back. Press any location on the back and it will focus on that area .. and when you look through the finder it will show the same area under your AF point. This is just SUPER. This is a BIG step improvement vs the EOS 6dii, which had these focus points lumped in the middle. With the RP you hardly ever focus on the "wrong" part in your picture.

Configured the top right of the screen to be abler to direct where I want to focus with the thumb on the screen - that works just great.

Love the on of button on the left in combination with the Av/Tv/etc dial on the right. So easy to operate and set - brilliant.

The "wheel" next to the shutter button is a bit far away from the shutter. I can only control it well and quickly if I hold the grip with "middle-ring-pinky" fingers. The 6Dii was always a bit cluttered with buttons on the back and top side - I like the RP layout and number much better. Also I don't miss the top LCD display. All is in the EVF or rear screen.

The EVF is for sure different than the 6dii pentaprism, but easy to get used to. The extra info is very welcome and it is great to see from the brightness in the EVF if you need to move the over / under exposure dial or need to look for some spot metering.

Also love the reduced weight and size - I believe it's 400-500 gram for the entire combo - which is a significant reduction when hiking for 4-8 hours with the camera on your back.

Battery life .. hmm.. it;s like the Nokia 6210 vs the iPhone: The Nokia ( - 6dii ) would last a full week on 1 charge - but better charge up your iPhone ( RP ) every night !

Built quality feels good and robust. The RP is the cheapest FF camera - but stil not cheap enough for me to submit it to a drop test.

Image quality:

Just very very nice. The OOC JPEGS are very hard to beat. I now mostly shoot RAW - but convert to JPEG in Canon DPP - almost not making any edits. only when exposure is off, I make some changes. I personally find it very difficult to make any picture "looking better" than the OOC pics. I must say I do make an effort to get then right in camera ( DOF, AE, but also picture style, WB, etc )

The camera has some nice travel features: shoot any pic in camera in the built in HDR mode - using "art vivid". It gives an EXTREME picture - which just does great on social media / what's app . etc. and with the built in wifi it's easy as 1-2-3 to get it to your iPhone.

Some pics attached. Mostly RAW to JPEG using DPP with only minor editing. From DPP exported to JPEG and into iPhoto ( where I use to crop / rotate / etc ). The below ones are all exported again from iPhoto. Added also one HDR image as an example. If anyone want's I can post also the raws.

Below some of the pictures - just because we do not have enough of them here on the forum !! suggestions on how to make better pictures and to improve on cropping or post processing are appreciated !

Full Scottish - I believe I shot this with SCN mode set to food.

Shot this one with my 200mm on RP with adaptor. Focus is just as fast as with the 6dii

shot in JPEG ( as switched off RAW by accident ) and processed in iPhoto

OOC JPEG - using handheld :HDR - 3 bracket shots and processed in camera "art vivid"

Don't get me wrong, but the landscapes looks like you could have shout them with a cellphone just as well.

Sure, could have done that. I think color, resolution, dynamic range would have looked very different. I did it once when I was in Grand Canyon: shooting with the DSLR 1100D and also with my iPhone for the wide angles. But when I put the 2 next to each other - the quality is miles apart.

In what sense do you think these look like smart phone pics ? always happy to learn.

Perhaps you can post a picture to show what you mean.

Thanks. I particularly like the tonality of the image of the aqueduct. Could you share your PP on this image?

Re: THE EOS RP ROCKS !

Hi Hoka,

I shot it in camera using the standard "Landscape" profile. As per my other thread from yesterday I have since then decided to shoot all my images in a modified version of "Fine Detail (5,2,4,0,1,0)", but in that case the image would have come out (almost) identical. ( I just did the check in DPP )

In DPP I made minor processing: moved the M-G color slider to +1.0 and moved the "saturation" slider +0.5. That's all.

The shot was done at noon time, but due to clouds creating some diffusion - the lighting was exceptional.

Wow!!!  I had assumed that you had  significantly reduced the highlights and push the shadows. Very impressive. Thanks for taking the time to let me know what you did.

Is that the reason why there's not a single photo of yours to be seen?...because you're still pondering between a camera and a cellphone?
