canon EF 85mm f1.8 is a very decent lens, it is sharp, fast focusing, and beautiful bokeh! the only shortcoming of this lens is CA issue in high contrast situation, which can be corrected in PS6. price is very attractive, those who are critical about sharpness and fast focus speed, this the lens for you in that FL.

i picked up a copy a few years ago and it was great right out of the box, didn't need any fiddling as far as MA is concerned. i am very satisfied with its performance and every camera bag should have one of this lens, me thinks.

here are a few samples when i tested it on my cat for the first time, she was not very happy with my intrusion in her leisure time! please note the bokeh, i think it is very decent:

enjoy.

This lens is so underrated IMO. I have no need for 1.4 or 1.2 personally. I shoot all my bridal portraits with this lens. At say F4 it is REALLY sharp.

drawbacks (Re: canon ef 85mm f1.8 USM

I agree it is fantastic for the price.  Another drawback for me, in addition to CA, is a not-so-great minimum focus distance. I can get closer, and therefore achieve same or better magnification, with 50mm 1.4. But it is still a great lens.

This has been my under-the-basket lens for years. I'm tempted to sell it and my 85mm f1.2 II for the f1.4 version though.

I definitely recommend you rent the f1.4 LIS to see if it's af accuracy and ca are an improvement on what you already have.

Minimum focus distance was my concern with buying this lens. I have the 50 1.8  it was great on my cropped 800D but in my eos R a bit wide but that being said I find it works well in other situations. I have the Tamron 70-200 2.8 SP gen 2 that does really well but a bit heavy to do portraits.  I am using the eos R.  The RF lens are very costly but I would not want nor could I afford an 85 mm 1.2.

looks like I may just have to bite it and buy the cannon 85 mm 1.8.

Minimum Focus Distance in the 85 1.8 will be enough to do headshots. If you want to get closer than that, then you will run into problems. I think you should give it a try; it focuses better than the 50mm 1.4.

Take care,

Armando

How do you think the 10 year old 1.8 compares to the 1.4 IS?  Considering the $1,000 price difference? I always see great photos of the 1.8 but people say the 1.4 is amazing.

i understand your question is addressed to someone else, but i would like to add that the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because of its "CA" if used in extreme contrasty situation, as i'v already noted. other wise, this lens deserves 5 stars very easily! sharpness, color rendition, contrast and fast auto focus are all topnotch, especially at this reasonable price.

This is often the first lens I recommend for those on a budget looking to move past their kit lens.  I used it for years.

I agree. The CA is really bad if you shoot say a backlit tree.

its funny I have had it for years and beause,I have it ,I notice other people who have it. Many of the world class pros choose the 1.8 ( or used to anyway)

ok thanks  I think the focus distance on my 70-200 Tamron gen 2 is about 90 cm  the singma and Tamron 85 mm are at around 80 cm if I remember correctly .  Yes for the price the canon 85 mm seems ok, just hard to imagine how long that has been in production

Yes, an excellent and good-value lens.

And I wish to say the same thing about the EF 100mm f/2 USM.

(Canon the greedy, unlike other manufacturers, does not include lens hoods for its non-L lenses. The two above happen to share the same lens hood. I purchased one to share between them. By the way, the design of this lens hood is cheap: its snaps in place but turns around rather loosely, instead of fitting tightly after a reassuring "click".)

i don't own a canon 100 f2.0 USM macro lens but i do hear lots of praise from the owners! i had a choice between getting a canon 100 f2.0 macro and a zeiss 100mm f2.0 Makro Planer and i settled for zeiss. but could not lose having either one. the only a few differences between the 2 macro lenses, which are: zeiss is manual focus, non-IS, 1:2 magnification and much better built lens but a 1/3 higher in price   but it is just a matter of taste, and like i said, one cannot lose with either one.

i don't own a canon 100 f2.0 USM macro lens

What I was referring to is not a macro lens. Details here.

Again, I was not talking about a macro lens.

I use my EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro lens strictly for macro photography. (I have tried it on a few portraiture occasions, but was not happy with the results. I have other lenses more suitable for the purpose: EF 85/1.8, EF 100/2, EF 135/2L.)

my apologies for the confusion here, Kaso! i think we have established that 85 f1.8 USM is a great value for those who don't have the budget for hefty 85 f1.4/85 f1.2 behemoth.

but my response was also to your 100 f2.0 remark, which I mistook for EF 100 f2.8 L IS macro (i am not a morning person) i thank you for correction.
