Two important camera features Canon PowerShot Talk

1-The DIGIC 5 processor has plenty of juice remaining to power Canon’s new Multi-Area White Balance system. Instead of reading the average light on an image, this system reviews more than one segment of an image and modifies the white balance for each separately.

2-The sensor and processor in the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS also puts wow in your moviemaking. You have the choice of 1080p Full-HD video with stereo sound at 24fps or 720p HD video at 30fp

Re: Two important camera features Canon PowerShot Talk

I've really wondered what the difference might be between Digic 5, 6, 7 and 8.  I've had the impression that Digic 8 is needed for 4K video, but to tell the truth, I haven't come across a discussion of the various Digic versions and what they do.

Smarter cameras are better cameras...

AWB (How smart... Accurate, it makes a determination. Also, newer DIGIC7 and all DIGIC8's support the newer AWB-W btw)

FPS (the ability to digest what the camera can drive anyways)

AF (speed and accuracy)

Eye AF

Low Light AF (part of it, the other half being the sensor / how much light the lens mounted is drawing in)

Noise reduction improvements (DIGIC6 was "the big one". Moving to DIGIC6 or newer from anything before it, is a huge difference in SOOC JPEG noise)

Metering (the newer DIGIC8 is a lot better here, and it was already good before DIGIC8)

4K (yup)

In-camera corrections, including your SOOC JPEGs, not just in-camera RAW

Picture profiles including improved sharpness algorithms

JPEG color response (they tweak things from time to time which gets bundled with the DIGIC processor software at the time the camera ships)

Automatic detection of scene type (if using Auto)

Dual IS which is merely the sensor now acts as a datapooint for the gyro sensors in-lens giving IS systems better accuracy. Think small, but added benefit to IS

A very good analysis of the Digic engine improvements. Software is the main item in upgrades. The hardware is getting bigger and in some cases that improves usability in others it's simply a detriment. Overall, improvements in IQ comes via software. And that comes very slowly indeed.

Re: Two important camera features Canon PowerShot Talk

Thanks for the detailed response! Very useful.

I had wondered about the differences between the G7Xii and G5x.  They appear to have the same lens and many other similar features  (ignoring the viewfinder difference for the moment), but the G5X has an older Digic version than the G7Xii, and perhaps the Digic 7 in the G7Xii explains some of the improved functions in it compared to the G5X.

As such the G7X II is superior, except for lacking an EVF vs a G5X, yes.

If you go to the DPReview comparator and compare the G7X II against the G7X and G5X, you'll see a big difference in contrast and the resolution of fine detail.  On either side of center in the comparator there are a pair of black and white cards with black and white dots of all sizes.  Click on one of those and you'll see a huge difference in favor of the G7X II.  The Canon engineers stated in an interview that DIGIC 7 has 14 times the processing power of DIGIC 6.

That's nice to know....I'd been wondering what kind of difference the DIGIC 7 made.
