X-E3 as a backup for an X-Pro2?

X-E3 as a backup for an X-Pro2?

I'm currently using an X-M1 as a backup body for my XP2.  I’m thinking it’s time to move up to an X-E3 for that purpose, and also as a secondary body in general.

I’m finding that my aging eyes are starting to prefer an EVF over an OVF, and even the XP2 is getting used in EVF mode more and more.  An X-E3 seems to make logical sense - the control set is very similar to my XP2.  And, it would be a good host for my 14 when I’m shooting using two bodies.

I’ll be using it with my Fuji primes, I doubt I’ll ever adapt anything else to it and I don’t own any Fuji zooms.  My Fuji kit is what I carry when I’m going light.

Is there any reason I wouldn’t want to pick up an X-E3 at this point?

I should mention that I prefer the rangefinderesque form factor of the X-Pro2, so I’m not considering the X-T series cameras.

My backup body for my X-T3, and X-T2 before that is an X-E3. It is a great camera which is a perfect lightweight travel option. I prefer the RF type body, otherwise I would recommend going with the X-T30.

Based on your eyes, go for an X-T2 or X-H1.

Still using a XE2 as my backup to an Xpro2. I think the XE3 would be even better.

Own an XT3 and I’m wanting a smaller 2nd body. I’m torn between the XT30 (newer tech) or the XE3...

I tried to look at one today after work, but the store only had a sealed one and none on display.  I’m only tire kicking right now, so I didn’t press the issue.  I’ll keep looking for one to  check out.

I do to, but if your eyesight is starting to be a challenge you might just want the big beautiful EVFs in X-T2 or X-H1.

Hi, if this helps, I have a XE3 and it delivers great images with the primes, is fast and easy to use (once set up and once familiar - like any camera), and is light, small and unobtrusive. I tend to use it with either a 23/f2 (when I carry my trio of the 16/f2.8 and 50/f2), or as a single unit with the 27/f2.8.

The XE3 was intended to back up my XT3, but it gets equal use to the latter as it is such fun to use.

The X-E3 is a good addition to a bigger camera.  I use mine not as backup (though it is), but when I want a smaller, lighter body.  The EVF is an improvement in bright light and as presbyopia sets in I use it to review shots as it has my prescription is dialled in but the rear LCD needs reading glasses.  I went from X-E2 to X-E3 mainly to avoid doubts about taking a 24 Mp or a 16 Mp camera.  In point of fact it isn't easy to see a difference in output, I did some careful comparisons before trading.  USB charging is good as my brain is heading the same way as my eyes and forgetting the charger is all too common.

I’ll try to do a direct comparison between an X-T2 and a X-E3 EVF.  Thanks!

The X-E3 is my backup to my Nikon Z6.

-Even though I use my X-E3 much more than the Z6.

So maybe the Z6 is the backup to my X-E3.

Three cameras I had pure joy shooting:

GF2, GX7 and the X-E2. Getting the X-E3 was an easy choice. I still look at the GX7 MkIII every time I'm in Adorama or B&H... I tend to take better and more pics with a camera I feel comfortable with.

I think the XE series are fantastic!  My first Fuji was the X-E1 and I shot the heck out of it for years.  Today I’m shooting the X100F and XPRO2 having sold my X-E3.

The XEs are very compact which makes them a primo choice as a 2nd body.  I found the controls differences between the XE3 and X100F (strange as it may seem my primary Fuji body) to be distracting enough that I swapped to the XPRO2.  You might want to look at how you’ve setup your XPRO to  make sure that you can either replicate the controls on the XE or that the differences between the two are immaterial to your style.

I bought the XE3 a couple of weeks ago as a 2nd body to my XT3, and I love it! I give it a lot of time lately to get used to. I like it when the camera body becomes an extension of yourself. I may well end up using this as much as the XT3 because of the size and form factor.

PROs: Smaller size, nice RF form-factor (am now getting used to right-eye framing), beautiful lines, very similar to XT3 controls.

NEGs for me: EVF of XT3 is noticeably better, no flip screen, no ISO dial (but I have a work around for that by putting that on the front dial).

When I bought it I immediately set it up the same as my XT3 in terms of customisations. I use it with the 35 f/2 or 23 f/2 mainly, which are beautifully small and powerful combos. Should work fine with the other primes too.

My idea for a 2-body outing would be the standard/tele on the XE3, taking shots from eye level, and the wide angle on the XT3, taking low angle with the flip screen.

XE3 with 35 f/2

For me, I would get another XP2 as backup. Same usability, same settings, same feel. So, it would make no difference at all if I am going with the backup body or the main body, I can use them in parallel without spending a single thought which camera is in my hands.

Re: X-E3 as a backup for an X-Pro2?

I was willing to put up with the significantly smaller image and was interested in that camera too, but I have seen comments by two trusted reviewers that there is very long lag, maybe a second or two, for the evf to turn on with the X-E3 and one comment that the proximity sensor switch just does not work very well if you wear glasses. I could not put up with that.

Glasses-wearing X-E3 owner here - happy to confirm that I have not experienced either of those issues. EVF startup very snappy on mine - maybe it was fixed by firmware?

Hi, nor me, never experienced any lag, including on a beach walk this afternoon.

If you leave it on and it gees to sleep, then like all Fuji-s, my XT3 included, there is a second from half pressing the shutter button until everything is ready. But, as I say, this happens on the XT3 too. I just press the shutter button as I lift the camera to my eye and the EVF is on and ready to goes by the time my eye is looking through it.

This is the big one for me and I’m inclined to agree. Everyone has different dexterity and muscle memory, but I went double X-T3 because originally using an X-T3 in tandem with an X-T2 was an exercise in frustration. They are *just* different enough that it slowed me down immensely.
