Is the T6 is decent upgrade from a T1i?

Howdy,

We have a T1i with the 18-55 and 55-250 IS lenses that has served us well for many years.  Lately it has been acting up a bit and we're not sure if it's the camera or the lens or what.  Walmart has the T6 on sale right now since the T7 came out and I picked up the T6 in a package with the 18-55 and 75-300 III lens for $350.

I've seen some people mention that the 75-300 lens isn't very good since it doesn't have IS on it and that I'd be better off using the 55-250 I already have (assuming it's not the reason my T1i is having issues).

We have a very small budget ($400 or so) so I'm just looking for opinions on if the T6 bundle I got is worth what I paid or if I should look into a used T5i or do something else.

This is used as a family camera to take pictures of kids events, vacations, etc.

If anyone has suggestions, ideas, or anything else, please let me know.

Thanks!

I have the T6 and am fairly happy with it but it's also a first camera.  As you mentioned, the 75-300 isn't very good and was the first lens I replaced.

I certainly don't regret the T6 but sometimes wish I had waited and saved for the new RP but hindsight is 20/20.....

Get something like the T6i (750D) or T6s (760D), T7i (800D), or SL2 (200D) camera instead. Read the reviews. You should find that the T6 (1300D) is less expensive for a reason. Update your lenses also to the STM version.

The T6 is a little better in the IQ side of things. I don't know its exact specs, but the t1i is on a higher price bracket even though it's an older body. That means the t1i probably has some specs that are better.

You really don't need the lenses. I'd opt for a body only. At $400, you can probably get a t6i

the T6 is behind on digic version, just put it in the side by side here on dpreview to compare it to something like t5i

The main thing (maybe only thing)  you'll lose is FEC, flash exposure compensation.  I consider that a "must have" feature, you may not.

If I were in your shoes I'd buy a new body and keep the lenses.  I often buy refurbs from Canon and have never had a problem.  Any of the bodies ending in "i" (or any SL) would be preferable to any non "i" body IMO.

This.

The OP should consider T6i or SL2.
