Lytro Illum for 3D

I'm thinking about picking up a Lytro Illum to use for 3D stereo photography. I've tried their software with some samples I found online and the effect seems pretty convincing in my Oculus Rift.

Is anyone here shooting 3D on an Illum? What are the limitations? Can you adjust the IPD?

Ultimately, I'd like to try and mount a fisheye conversion lens on it and see if I can create 3D 360° panos.  Does anyone know if that's a realistic possibility?

Thanks.

Re: Lytro Illum for 3D

The maximum IPD (or the effective "interaxial") with the Lytros is limited by the effective aperture size of the lens used.  Light field cameras are able to generate stereo pairs by "looking through" the left side and the right side of the lens "hole".  Typically, this is quite small, implying the strereoscopic effect is "condensed" to closer subject matter.

Can the interaxial be adjusted?  It probably can, but there is still a maximum distance as described above.

Re: Lytro Illum for 3D

Hi winkalman,

I recently purchased an Illum from ebay to experiment with. And the answer is yes, you can generate 3d images, again will work best for subjects at close range, or zoomed in. But even on images further away, you can generate depth maps. If you want to experiment before buying, you can download the last version of the Lytro software and sample images :

You should also get a copy of StereoPhoto Maker:

I have not spent too much time creating 3d images, but you can extract left & right images using the lytro tool, StereoPhoto lets you combine images, extract depth maps etc. The image resolution is only about 4mp, but should be fine for most uses. The camera is "funky" and has a learning curve.
