Trouble with exposure while using ring flash????

Hi there, I was wondering if anybody has experienced the problem I am having with the exposure of there images while using a ring flash.

I have a cannon 400d, 100mm macro lens and a younguo external ring flash.

I use my camera for dental photography to take up close pictures of cases.

I have had teaching in using the manual settings of the camera and setting them to what I need for the shots I want. I generally have iso-100 shutter speed-1/125 and I adjust my f-stop depending how close I am, ranged from 22 higher.

My flash setting is set to ETTL

I am puzzled as to why I am getting a varied degree of exposure on my photos when I have my settings set to the same. I seem to get a different exposure if u half press the capture button. But it’s always inconsistent, I don’t know whether it’s going to be over bright or just right.

I have attached 2 images to try and explain what I have described.

I hope someone can help.

You seem to be doing pretty much all the right things, the only possibility I can see is that you may be choosing too small an aperture forcing the ETTL exposure system to work on the edge of its limts. Try using f8 or f11 or if you need greater depth of field and must use f22 then turn the ISO up to 200 or 400.

ETTL can be very inconsistent.  When I'm indoors with flash as the main source of light, everything is in manual mode.  Set the flash output once, and done.
