New G7 owner, struggling with EVF

HI all, 8m an experienced photographer who recently purchased a G7. I have been shooting with Nikon for over 30 years.

The EVF on the G7 is taking a bit to accustomed to. Is there a way to turn of the feature where the EVF adjusts to the exposure settings? While I’m sue helpful at some point, it’s current throwing me off.

Thanks,

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7

I am sure there must be the equivalent funcion of Olympus 'OVF (optical viewfinder) simulation, where the adjustments made to the exposure do not reflect in brightening or darkening of the view through the EVF.

It sounds like that may be the "Constant Preview" function turned to "on," though I think it only applies when shooting in manual exposure mode.

Have you downloaded the full manual for the camera? ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-g7_adv_en_om.pdf

Yes.

In M-mode, when "Constant Preview" is ON, the screen responds to F-value, shutter speed and ISO.

In M-mode, when "Constant Preview" is OFF, the screen does not react to anything.

In other modes than M, the screen/EVF only responds to exposure compensation (within +/- 3 EV IIRC), regardless of the "Constant Preview" setting.

I do have the full manual, but the terminology is less familiar to me than with Nikon's. I'll take a look based on your comment. Thanks!

I assume you have the Exp. Comp. display on in the EVF. There's a setting in the menu that re-sets EC to "0" after turning cam. off in all Panny bodies I've had - if this is what you mean - that it starts up with EC not zeroed.

It's hard for me to imaging that you would NOT want to see the effect of exposure changes on the EVF and live histogram...as would see shooting in live view in your Nikons...which is the game-changing attribute of the mirrorless revolution.

Thank you! The terminology of “constant preview” was throwing me off.

I really appreciate the help

Just to clarify as it is a strange question on this forum How is the viewfinder showing whether your shot is correctly, under or overexposed throwing you off?

It’s no where near accurate to the actual image that’s captured. Now that I know how to turn it off I should be fine. Plus I’m pretty old school, so even if it was accurate I would find it annoying.

If you want the vf accurate to the scene you can adjust the vf brightness and probably  the colours as well to suite your self.

Much like a DSLR, there should be a little exposure meter in the EVF or Liveview on the bottom of the screen, showing the exposure with the little tick marks and the + or - and a number.  It can be referred to for exposure like a DSLR.

Interesting because having owned a lot of Panasonic cameras I have always found it very close to my expectations.  I won't say accurate because I can't see anyway how you can compare what you saw through the viewfinder when you took the picture with the finished picture.  Surely it can only be perception and just the process of using a viewfinder will no doubt make your brain function differently to say looking at finished article on a big screen.

It's easy to compare how the image looks before and after releasing the shutter by using the "auto review" functionality. Sometimes with some cameras there is a clear difference, sometimes not. And of course it will always look different on a computer screen or printed.
