4K video program for G7

In Costa Rica last year my wife took several pictures with her iPhone in live mode and the  software pieced them together to make a wonderful side show.  Now I suddenly need to learn how to take and process videos with my G7 to do something similar for an upcoming trip to Kruger.

Can anyone recommend a program to process videos, and maybe a good tutorial for actually taking them?  Thanks in advance.

Unable to help myself I’m afraid - but since your question is not strictly related to a specific camera brand, perhaps you could try posting it in the « Digital Video » forum so as to get as many suggestions as possible ?

If your G7 has a feature called the "snapshot motion picture", the camera can join up a few photos to create a movie file. But it is limited on the shots can be used IIRC as I never used it.

In fact, by any image editor program can do the same for you. I use the free VSDC Free Video Editor which is very easy for the job. Open the program, add images in any order you like, set the display duration and transition effect, add background music, and export it in any video file you like. Simple, easy and free.

DaVinci Resolve. It is probably the best video editor for color grading / adjusting colors. It is free for private use. You might need a semi-recent graphics card, though (a lot of crashes probably means the GPU is not supported).

I've tried out a few, and the most user friendly one I've encountered is Wondershare Filmora. It's commercial software, but they have a free trial, so you might want to check it out.

If you want free, HitFilm Express will do all the basics for free, and is very powerful, with the option to buy add-ons for more advanced features. There is a learning curve though.

Both have very useful video tutorials on YouTube.

Another vote for Davinci Resolve. Not something you can just jump in and use but there are plenty of youtube tutorials.

Faced with a similar question, I opted for Adobe Premiere Elements. It does what I need, and was fairly easy to get into (it's a one off purchase, not subscription).

Tbh, I mostly record in 1080p. For what I do with the output, the overhead in processing and moving around 4K isn't worth it. YMMV, of course

One thing that caught me out.  Usually, if you have ISO set to Auto, it stays that way as you change modes.  Not so with "manual" video - make sure you check the ISO is what you want it.

On G7 (or other Panasonic cameras), it should be the "Stop Motion Video".

It is explained on P.280 and P. 209 of the pdf version manual of G7 as below:

Thanks everyone, and Albert your suggestion may be exactly what I'm looking for.  That is the first I've heard of stop motion video, and I'll give it a try.  The other thing I learned is that in iMovie you can use the "Ken Burns" cropping tool to zoom in on a photo or movie to make a slideshow or movie a bit more interesting.  Going to give that a try and see if I'm too old to learn something new.

My vote is a bit tentative. I've just started using it, and find the learning curve a lot easier than Lightworks (though that's good too, when you get to know it). However, I'm not impressed with it's (lack of) stability. In editing just one project, I've had several fatal crashes that nuked my work. I'll have to relearn the old habit of saving obsessively at every little milestone.

Be careful with Ken Burns, I once made a slide show using ProShow Gold and plenty of Ken Burns effects. The trouble was I was creating it on a 24" monitor and when it was later shown on a large flat screen TV the effect was overwhelming, tended to sea-sickness results.

So if experimenting with Ken Burns, do that using the target TV as the monitor and sit back at normal viewing distance so you can get the degree of the effect right. Very slow zooms and pans are the answer. Underdone is way better than overdone.
