Will moving from Canon 5D MkIII to EOS R Be worth it?

Hi,

To give some background - I'm just getting into higher end cameras. I have an old brute 5D Mk III that I got on a great deal about 6 months ago. I've shot it enough to know that I crave higher quality photos now. I'm seriously considering getting the EOS R and pairing it with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens which I could also use on the 5D as a backup. Versatility-wise I think the EOS R looks amazing. I did test a Sony A7iii just in case I wanted to even consider switching, but the pop out screen on the EOS R and the higher resolution of the R make me want to stick with Canon. My favorite stuff to do is street and landscape photography. I have no goals to do weddings/events, but getting better at portraits in a street sort of way is something I'm interested in getting better at as well. For me this is still more of a hobby than career, although, I do want to get to the point of being able to sell prints or possibly even publish a book someday.

My big question here is - Does anyone have experience with both these cameras (5D MkIII and EOS R)? Would you see it as a step in the right direction to move to the EOS R from the 5D?

Any input at this point is useful. I want to make sure I'm going to spend money wisely if at all.

Thanks!

The step from the 5D3 to the R is a big one in a positive direction.

Welcome to DPreview!

For what you want to do with photography I would advise going to the R from the 5Dmiii. I have the 5dmiii and 1dx and bought the RP to get acquainted with mirrorless. I plan to stay with Canon at this point.

With the anticipation of mirrorless becoming prominent in the Photography arena I skipped the 5dmiv and 1Dxii. I will definitely use the RP more frequently than my 5dmiii. The 1dx is another story. I still plan to use the 1dx for some of the sports I shoot.

i think you will be pleased with the Canon R. You might check the RP also. You can check out some comparisons on this forum.

Good Luck

The only thing you lose going to the R is a memory card slot. If having one slot is okay, then the R is a great choice. While I'm not sure about the Sigma lens working with the adapter, it is a fact that the EF lenses work seamlessly with the R.

I went from the III to the IV and found that it is a better camera all 'round. The R seems to be a little better than the IV when it comes to focusing speed and accuracy. But I'm one of those sticks in the mud that won't go without two card slots. I don't do many paid shoots anymore, but when I do, I want that bit of extra insurance that the second card gives.

I would ask that anyone replying please don't ruin this thread by arguing about one vs two card slots.  I only brought it up so that the OP wouldn't ask me why I don't have the R instead of the IV since I mentioned that the R focuses better than the IV.

I've been using my R for hobbyist portraiture and street/landscapes and it works phenomenally. The flip-out screen and ergonomics make it so I rarely have to worry about the camera and can just focus on composition and framing. I also use it professionally for video and weddings/event work and I haven't run into any issues there, just in case you do step into that world in the future.

It didn't take me much time to acclimate to the control layout as I had been previously using the M50, but if you're coming from a DSLR it may be enough to throw you off for a bit. But once you get the camera setup exactly how you want it, using it is completely second nature. I don't own any RF lenses, but I use the control ring adapter and it makes every shooting situation a breeze.

I don't have any experience with the 5D3 but I can say the EOS R is worth every penny I spent on it. And you can find one with a pretty significant discount at this point on ebay/etc.

I've been a long time user of the 5dmkiii and just rented the R with kit lens for the Easter weekend.  Been fiddling around with it already and love the AF on this.  I'm also pumped about putting some prime L glass on this thing as well.  Overall been very pleased thus far.  I'm gonna buy one in the near future.

Thanks everyone who responded! I did get the EOS R! Showed up today and I took it out for a spin. It has an amazing amount of customization. Still looking through the images from today, but so far the detail looks great.

Thanks!

I have used 5D MkIV (and i still have it). R is a nice camera, but R6 and R5 are the real next generation ... i bought R6 some 6 months ago and it still is amazing . R5 was too expensive and i did not need the 45 mp

IBIS  and AF system will give you a totally new experience - and some images you could not take with 5D. Especially the new AF system is something that you will like after trying it (read the manual first  )

Sigma24-70 will work with R6 and IBIS will work. Just buy the adapter that works surprisingly well  with all lenses - i have used EF 24-70 f 4 and it is a nice lens with R6. Of course new RF lenses are very good - but the price is quite high. EF lenses just work

The AF system will be especially useful for street and possibly portraits (extremely fast face/eye detection and perfect focus - if you want it.

The sensor size might make you think  if size matters ... i do not see real differences when i compare 5DMkIV and R6 - and i do print images up to A2 size - ok for even bigger prints . Images are clean without noise and the resolution is good enough for everything.
