OK, the photos were taken close to 1st of April - but does any news around this date have to be a hoax?

I had a look at the website and they were talking about a K1 camera (thus a FF model based on K1 design) with a fix mirror like we have seen at Sony SLT Alpha 57.

It's hard or even not possible for Pentax to get rid of k-mount. Of course they could develop mirrorless cameras with k-mount, too? - But why should they do so. k-mount defines the flange and there would be space for a mirror - no matter if they would build one into the camera or not.

A fixed mirror would be something like a hybrid between both systems. It would erase at least some of the problems a mirror maybe brings into the system like mechanically shaking and acoustic noise.

But now think of a very special mirror you can switch on/off electronically - a technique like this one:

http://www.kentoptronics.com/mirror.html

That would be great - but now one step ahead:

Think of the mirror to be an optical glass element that is not just able to act like a mirror or like plain glass - but also like a filter that can be switched towards different wavelengths electronically - a technique like this one:

http://www.optoplex.com/Optical_Tunable_Filter.htm

http://news.mit.edu/2018/chip-optical-filter-processes-wide-range-light-wavelengths-0801

Any idea what we could do with filters like these?

Think of the sensor to be a B&W sensor with extreme low light capabilities and high resolution. The filter inside the glass element could switch to different wavelength and transfer them to the sensor that is just capable to measure light intensities but not colours - but depending on the filter settings of the glass element it would receive a red-blue-green or whatever colour channel you want to have.

It could be a replacement of the PixelShift technology! And the system would not be limited to RGB but could also work CMYK. It could be possible to reach accuracy of colours we never saw before - just as an option and I would not expect it at a first of series camera.

So far my "visionary dreams" ...

And even if the rumor was jsut a hoax - it was fuel for my brain to awake the dreamer in me.

Best regards

Holger

Hi Holger

I think Ricoh has a patent for SLT.

That''s for April fool's....

I suspect we'll be seeing a simple / lightweight / economical FF dslr from Pentax pretty soon, before the K1iii. And before the K3iii as well.

I bet it will also have a touch-screen.

It will be styled like the KP and will be perfect for the FA Limiteds.

And now my crystal ball is all misty again...

If it also gets a big video upgrade (4K, AF) i might be tempted.

That would be IDEAL in my book.

As I've commented before, the KP's size is particularly appreciated by journalists.

An FF adaptation would make it even more convenient to use on the fly than a K1.

Hilarity would ensue if a third iteration on the K-1 came out before:

- the long rumored APS-C replacement of the K-3II
- more modern FF glass

April's fool hoax

May or may not be. FWIW, both photos carry exif data indicating a PENTAX K-1 Mark III using a 31mm lens. original taken date given to be 16 Dec 2018.

I had looked at those exif data before I posted. The exif data were identical in shutter, aperture, iso values, taken in the exact same GPS location, somewhere in Hong KONG where this dchome is located (and also the poster claims to live).

Worst of all, both photos were claimed to be taken at the same time 6:11 pm !!!!.  Someone just doctored those exif data for this prank. Still not enough evidence ?

Actually, that seems reasonably conclusive to me--I didn't do a side by side compare.

Weird approach, though. Wonder why the source didn't just doctor the original exifs independently rather than doing one and using it twice?

If it would be a B&W sensor that gets its color information from an switchable color filter and merge each photo from three internal photos (one for each RGB channel) the 18 MP would end up with 54 MP of a classic sensor - with the triple amount of light (minus loss from the filter) and option for nosie reduction with information from three signals. That should be enough for everyone.

But this ist just a creative way of thinking a new camera concept and giving the 18 MP sensor some meaning.
