BG-E22 USB C Charging problem
1

USB C charging is intermittent. Sometimes the BG-E22 charging light will come on; other times it will not. Usually not. I have two LP-E6N batteries in the BG-E22.

I have taken the batteries out and in. Removed BG-E22 from EOS R and put back (as unlikely as this would seem to be the issue).

I do also see that the batteries seem to "leak" some charge even though camera is off.

any thoughts?

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

Funny to read this. I just returned my brand new BG-E22 as I believe it failed to charge. No light ever came on whether it was inserted in the camera or not or whether I used one or two batteries.  So very eager to hear if we are the only ones with this experience

I noticed that after connecting the USB-C cable to camera, it usually starts to charge after you switch the camera on and off. Don't know if this actually helps put it seemed like it helped. I also have the BG-E22 grip and two original Canon LP-E6N batteries in it.

i can confirm you need the 6n batteries I had the one from my 6d and it didn’t charge

monoprice had the wall outlet for only $11 with two usb cables and it works great

powerbanks are harder to get right I got this one imuto Portable Phone Charger... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KMRCM6Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share and it works perfectly. So for $35 I have both covered.

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

Just bought the BG-E22...have same problem. Using the correct N batteries. Will not charge via the included USB-C. Tried my Macbook charger and another Anker charger. Nothing. Sending back.

Indeed. That's what I do. You need to wake the camera up, then switch off, plug in USB and it starts charging after about 10 seconds.

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

Update: can confirm that the steps outlined above to work to get charging to work. 1. Camera on and unplugged from charger. 2. Tap button to bring camera awake 3. Turn off camera. 4. Plug in charger to camera. 5. 10 seconds later charging begins.

Turning camera on while charging stops the charging.

Correct, and the batteries need to be less than 90% charge otherwise they don't charge. That part is mentioned in the user manual.

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

Can anyone answer why the camera still turns on even if the BG-E22 is turned to the OFF position?

From the manual (https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART172182&cat=MIRRORLESS&actp=LIST): "To use the button and dials, turn the vertical-grip operation switch to ON".

The switch on the grip affects only to the buttons and dials, battery power is always provided.

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

Thank You!  I have 2 LP-E6N batteries in the grip with it plugged in as we speak.  Both batteries are under 60%, however I only have 1 Charge light on at the moment.  Does that mean the 2nd one will turn green when the 1st one is sufficiently charged?  I don't have a manual...

Never Mind.  It's the very last line of the Manual!

I am experiencing the same problem.  Went back to the authorized Canon dealer and even tried a new one, same issue.  I have noticed that the connection to the grip with the USB-C moves around freely, on both, is this by design?  Is there a bad lot that missed quality control?  Please share any knowledge.  Thank you

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

I use an Apple charger. Works fine. I also use a pd certified battery back and it works fine. Slow charging but it works.  One time I noticed that it didn’t charge even though Light was on. Makes me wonder if the code discharges the battery before it starts charging... only canon would know

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

I already had the 1.0.1 firmware in the grip.  So apparently this issue still exists even with the updated 1.0.1 firmware update?  Any other suggestions?

Re: BG-E22 USB C Charging problem

I realize this is a simplistic answer, but...
... disconnect the USBc cable, turn the plug "around", and try connecting it the other way...

I actually have done this before, "scientific method of observation" and it works, I am not sure why?  I have assumed that the USB-C was not specific since it allows either way.  I know that the other types of USB will only allow one way connection.  Maybe the Canon engineers thought it a good idea for some reason?  But based on my own experience, I would prefer a plug that will only allow the way that works.  Thank you for helping, I feel now that I am not the only one that made the same observation.

I was able to figure out the problem (well actually the staff at my local camera shop did).  You have to use official Canon batteries and not 3rd Party in order for the charger to work.

From my experience it is a crappy USB-C plug on the battery grip.  It's loose and sometimes charges, sometimes doesn't.  I now have to check to see if it's charged or take the batteries out and do them separately.  Really wish the battery grips would uniformly use the battery from the 1DXii, but oh well.

I took my R to a basketball game the other day because I love the 28-70 under the basket, and found the battery was only 10% because it had not charged.  Frustrating.  This is the only part of my R where it feels cheap.
