First DSLR below 325$, Eos 600D or Lumix GH2

Hi, I finally decided to buy a DSLR, but the problem is my budget for 325$. After researching about used DSLRs and all I could find is t3i vs gh2.

The reasons that I am considering t3i are :

1) I have heard canon cameras have greater colours

2) t3i has a battery grip and also heard that gh2 has pretty bad battery life.

3) t3i is around 270$ and comes with a lens while gh2 is around 210$ (body only).

If you are recommending me gh2 then could you suggest me a lens that can be used for stills as well as video?

I am mainly buying a camera for making short films, I am being really careful this time because 5 years ago I bought a Nikon Coolpix l840 and was greatly disappointed with the image quality. Is there any other camera you would recommend at this super budget.

(also I won't be hacking the gh2 because I don't see the point in taking a small risk)

I don't know anything about the Lumix camera, but I am still enjoying my Canon T3i (600D) camera. Eventually I'll upgrade but for now it's great. I use it with my Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Just check the Show Your Snap weekly thread, if you want to see any of my sample photos.  I've been using that camera for more than three years.

Here's one photo of a wood duck that I took with that camera in January.

I would pick the T3i with your budget situation.  In the future you should be able to get used Canon lenses more readily than Lumix lenses.

T3i sure has better stills but I am mainly going for video and the t3i dosent have af apparently for video and as a beginner I have no idea how to go manual focusing. I still looking and might go for g6 or G7.

Thanks

Re: First DSLR below 325$, Eos 600D or Lumix GH2

I heard that the newer Rebels are better for video with the STM lenses.  I don't make video pictures but if I did with the Canon T3i (600D) camera, I would probably just manually focus on something close by and just leave it at that using about 18mm to 25mm focal length.  That way I assume that the depth of field would be sufficient.  That's only my assumption; again I don't use the camera for video.  Good luck with your decision.  The Canon T3i (600D) has been available for about seven (7) years.  It's old technology that still works good with limitations.

But since the t3i dosent have af for video wouldn't it make a hindrance?

I have the G6 and love it.  However, if you are into video, you might want to go for the G7 as it has 4K.  4K isn't important to me, as my computer won't handle it and I Don't find it a big deal.  I have a GX80/85 and I have never used it. But, that's just me.

Thank you for your suggestion. What lenses do you use?

I haven't taken video pictures on my Canon T3i (600D) camera, so I can't give you the best answer. But I would think that it would not be an hindrance, if the focal length was short, you manually focused, and kept the focal length the same so that everything was in focus continually. You or I would not know precisely until we tried it out. Focusing becomes more of an issue when you zoom in and out with longer focal lengths.

Do cell phones have problems taking video pictures without an autofocus? I would think it would be the same with the Canon T3i (600D) camera. You would have to live with any limitations that come with an older camera that has about seven (7) year old technology, if you chose to do that.

Have you tried seeing if this could be answered on the Digital Video Talk forum?

I keep a 12-32mm on the GX80 and a 14-140mm on the G6.  It saves me swapping out lenses.  I also have an adaptor for using my Canon lenses.
