Building on this - correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking no Canon DSLR sensors are back-illuminated as it may be a Sony sensors-only thing at present, and Canon makes its own CMOS sensors.

A few companies make BSI sensors.  Sony is a big player in the market.  As pixel density increases, the BSI technology becomes more and more interesting.  In a standard sensor, all the wiring is on the top and the light has to find its way through the  all this wiring before it hits the photodiode.  In a Back Side Illuminated sensor, the light hits the photodiode first.  The wiring is all hidden inside.

The denser packed the pixels, the greater the loss of light, even if there are microlenses on top of each photosite.

Bye.
