Re: Exceptional sharp, portable and affordable

To be completely honest I did not notice it all. Only now you mention it I see some CA in the signs on the edges. It does not disturb at all. Nobody in my family noticed it. But I like to improve and have another thing to watch for. Only how to prevent it? By adding lens correction, is that enough?

Yep, lens correction is a very effective solution. For the barrel distortion too.

I think a better question for those complaining about the lens is post a better small lens than this.  For the price/size this is a very nice lens, but of course if you spend £1000 and get a lens that weighs 1kg, you will get an even better one.

I'm not complaining about the lens, I'm pointing out a fault with the image which was originally posted - and which was fixed in the re-processed version. I own much more expensive lenses which also benefit from CA removal and/or other correction in post.

If there would be a better lense weighing less than 400 grams I would certainly buy it. But you also have the law of diminishing returns. Next to the 24 mm I also carry the 40 mm but the 24 mm seems sharper. A friend of mine uses fuji and those primes seem sharper. I don't think that a full frame Canon using a zoom lens provides sharper images. If it would be the case I would certainly buy it but I have not been persuaded.

I use the 24 on my 70d and its  40mm cousin  on my full frames.  I just love these lenses!  They are somehow just so "pure" and fun and sharp and cheap.....  And LIGHT!  I have traveled to France and Germany taking only this lens on my 70d, and had a blast....and got great pics (for me at least)!  Next month I head to Rome and I've decided to throw the 40mm on my 6d and only take that (I anticipate a lot of low light churches, catacombs, etc....)

nice composition but nauseating CA, though

Agreed.

Particularly bad in the lower corners.

In the case of Low Light, surely you shouid be considering the 24/f1.4?

F/2.8 is not fast enough to be a low light choice. But having said that, I wouldn't necessarily suggest a faster lens - for static subjects IS is way more effective. It also remains beneficial when you want to stop down for depth of field.

The EF 24/2.8 IS is still a fairly small, light lens but with four-stop IS you have a much better chance of successful hand-held shots in those poorly-lit interiors. It also has sharper corners and much less CA than the pancake, FWIW.

I understand the love for the pancake lenses, but there's a reason why the bigger lenses exist.

Re: Exceptional sharp, portable and affordable

I use the 24 f/2.8 EF-S on the  little SL1 (bought for my wife, but she never uses)  to throw in my wife's purse at night (if she let's me throw it in) when I am done with photography for the day and want to have  little decent set up for night out.  It's tiny.  And does better than the cell phone (I think?) at night.  In ROME for example, I will be in search of the best pasta most evenings.

THanks,

CM

Re: Exceptional sharp, portable and affordable

FWIW, which is just one extra opinion, I have settled on the 28mm f/2.8 IS as my walkaround lens on APS-C cameras. I prefer the slightly longer focal length, but I especially prefer the IS which allows me consistently sharp photos at 1/8 second. It is also a bit lighter than the 24mm IS and has less vignetting than the 24mm pancake (which I also have). Compromises are everywhere, but go out and have fun.
