Re: 23mm f/2 vs 35mm f/2

I have been contemplating the same thing recently. I decided to stick with the 18-55mm lens for now because I have come to love it. It's so versatile for all the different types of photography I've experimented in so far and the zoom is just so incredibly helpful. I don't have a particularly strong need for either prime and if I get it, it would definitely because I simply want it. After taking a street photography workshop in which I took photos of people on the streets, I was surprised to find that I was most comfortable with the 23mm focal length because it gave me more room to crop and edit the photos in case I didn't quite frame the photo right. The 35mm lens was too narrow for me. Just my two cents.

Both have a lot to offer, but of the two the 35mm probably provides a greater difference in comparison to your kit lens, especially in terms of the DoF capabilities.

I should add that I own the lens, and that it is an insanely good performer for the price and size.

If you want to shoot every thing 23mm

If you want to shoot portraits and flattering subjects then get 35mm but 50mm is even better for that.

I have contemplated getting the 23mm but Im not sure how useful it will be for my shooting needs . I also own the 56mm and there are times when I wish I had a wider lens to contemplate that lens . That being said I love the 35mm and its on my camera most of the time .  You will probably enjoy the subject separation you get from the 35mm more.

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions!  This is has been incredibly helpful.  Right now, I'm thinking I'll get the 18-55mm kit with the 35mm lens.  The reason why is that after reading around, I'm also thinking I'll pick up the Samyang 12mm F2 lens, since it's inexpensive and gets great reviews.  I figure with the Samyang, I can probably wait on the 23mm.  Although reading all these reviews and being on this forum is making me want to purchase both of them!  Must resist.
