Thank you for the comment!

yes I have seen it (online/in pictures) and it looks like it would be a good addition. I feel the extra grip would be good while using the 12-35/35-100 2.8 lenses (those are my largest,.. gotta love m4/3 for the IQ and size!!),. But I may hold off for some time to become better acquainted with the camera.

I find the grip gives me confidence to hold it, one handed (with a small wrist strap, often).

Even with a 12-32 or 20 1.7 the grip does not make it thicker than camera/lens combo.

If you are a neck strap person, you may not need.

Re: Just ordered a Panny GX9!!

+1, I got mine a few weeks ago (GX85) with the 12-32 and 45-150, I haven't used it to it's full potential yet but so far I am very pleased and it will definitely  come with me on my next trip.

I use GX9 for nearly a year.. Thinking to get "second" GX9 to replace GX85 as second camera body.. GX9 useability is big improvement over GX85, and should be well over GX7.. Something I find very useful over GX85..

- setting mininum shutter speed

Unfortunately, this feature is pretty bare-bones. You can't set a variable minimum shutter speed that's a multiple of the focal length, which is pretty much required with  zooms.

- touch options to AF only, shoot, and disable

- More useful display detail

- EC dial use in M mode

- extra mp for crop in Ext Tele Conv mode

- S/C/MF switch (useful for both still and VDO)

- My menu page

- much better screen resolutions

- Faster and smoother VDO AF

- better rear grip

- L Monochrome D

Enjoy..

GX9 and G9 also have EC with Auto ISO in Manual mode. This is a big deal.

Hello

well my GX9 arrived today (one day early) and I took it for a spin in a museum as well as outside.

brief first observations:

1) autofocus is noticeably faster and more accurate than the GX7

2) the 20mm 1.7 focuses faster on the GX9 (so very happy about this!

3) the kit lens 12-60 is quite good (only taken about 15 shots but already enjoyed the extra reach over my 12-35 2.8)

4) low light of any museum will be tricky for most cameras but the GX9 handled it well, I shot in Aperture mode and auto iso and the camera performed admirably!

super excited to use this camera for the next few years (5+ hopefully). I got about 6 out of the GX7 and it’s still a great camera and fun to use.

as for the grip on the GX9, it felt good for the short time I used it today. Different from the GX7 yes, but better or worse is hard to say at this point. I enjoy the extra thumb grip but wonder if I’d like a few extra mm on the front,.. time will tell.

cheers and happy shooting

How are you liking the IBIS or DUAL IS?

Also, there is a add on grip that makes the camera much easier to one hand for video and photo. It also fits the GX85. A good accessory to get if you like to one hand the camera.

Grip for GX9 and GX85

I dropped this camera and lens a few months ago.  And the grip and lens hood took most of the concrete impact, thus saving the camera and lens from damage.

Hello toxic T

loving the much improved IBIS over the GX7.

the camera as a whole is a joy to use, looking forward to more time with it this coming week/weekend. I actually really like the grip and and on the fence about the additional grip. It looks nice enough and seems smaller than I had thought.

as for the DFD, I haven’t dabbled with it yet,. Still getting a hang of the new(ish) controls, but it’s an interesting idea for sure!

cheers everyone and thank you for all of the support and comments!

Congratulations on the new camera.  The IBIS is a game changer for me.  It's totally changed the way I shoot video and photo.  I wish you all the best.

Hello Mike

You can find 3D printed grip at eBay . It's twice cheaper and has window for battery compartment.

I should note due to changes in the battery compartment if you use the GX9 with the GX85's 3D printed grip, the battery compartment would not be able to open.

Very excited to "leap" ahead with this camera. I currently shoot a GX7 and am looking forward to the improved IBIS and colour tech/sensor upgrade. Now I need to sell my GX7 and GM5 to fund the purchase,..

Make a quick call to Tom Caldwell about the GM5; he's sure to find a happy home for it...

(I may sell my ZS200 but not too sure yet,..) will be saddened to see them go but I feel like a two-to-three-generation upgrade is warranted.

Any advice with the GX9? I hear that upgrading the GX9 to the newest software can also muck up the IBIS,.. is this true?

Cheers and happy shooting

Funny you mention Tom and the GM5. I have seen and read much about his views on it and I share/echo most of his sentiments about that fantastic little camera. So much so that I may hang on to it for a while longer yet.

it pairs so well with my 15, 20, and 42.5 f1.7 little lenses,..it’s great to have these kinds of “problems”,.

Intelligent Auto Plus uses only default noise reduction

Terry L wrote:

I bought the GX9 to use as a street camera - small, all black [I put tape over the Lumix logo] and with the flip screen, better than fully articulated for sneaky picture taking.

Then I had a dangerous and radical thought. Why not go the whole hog and use this thingy called Intelligent Auto Plus. I have never in my long experience of using cameras ever used Auto. Does any true camera snob? But I was wandering around town and thought: why not? I'm not taking any once-in-a-lifetime works-of-art photographs here. So it doesn't matter...

Well, I think I might be an iAuto+ sort of bloke all the time from now on. I don't know how they do it!

I agree that the Panasonic Intelligent Auto Plus seems to do a pretty good job. There is one MAJOR downside to it though. When you use it you cannot adjust the noise reduction setting. The default is too high, at least it is on the TX1 (ZS100 outside Japan). I set it to the minimum of -5 and that is what most people on the Panasonic forum recommend.

I just took a couple of ISO 1600 photos indoors using Intelligent Auto Plus and standard P mode (with -5 noise reduction). The shutter speed and aperture were identical. I can see much more noise reduction, loss of texture, and smearing at ISO 1600 and Intelligent Auto Plus.   I do not know if the default noise reduction on the GX9 was better chosen than the TX1 though.  I think the TX1 should have a default of more like -3 or -4.

Re: Intelligent Auto Plus uses only default noise reduction

In relation to the “street photography” thing,. Anyone I wonder how to silence the shutter? I tuners down all the sounds to zero (same as my GX7) but I find when I press the shutter release the camera makes a sound like the shutter flaps about 3 times and it’s not quiet at all,.

Not a major issue but I would prefer if I could quiet it by at least half!

Did you enable electronic shutter already (REC > Shutter Type > ESHTR? Note that ESHTR may drop to 10-bit RAWs instead of 12-bit.

The other way is instead of turning all sounds to zero manually, just set the camera to silent mode in the custom menu. You can assign this to a function button if you want to toggle it on and off quickly.

If it's still making sounds, it may be the aperture of the lens. M43 focuses wide open and then stops down the lens when taking the picture. If you want to avoid this you can set the camera to "Constant Preview" in the Custom menu (note only works in M mode). This will have the aperture stopped down the entire time. Note that it may make focusing slower and also preview slower (as it simulates the shutter speed also).

Re: GX9 Grip

Jake you are absolutely right. I bought 3D files from the author of GX85/GX80 grip, printed them out and tried on GX9. It didn't fit - not only compartmentent but lenght also. Thus I modified 3D model and now you can see the result at eBay.

I believe that with the GX8, and since, all Panasonic cameras do not drop bit rate when in ESHTR.

There was never any conclusive test done for the GX85 and GX9 that I have read, so it's unknown. For earlier cameras however it was known that the bit rate does drop.
