Source for strong split rings?

I've been using split rings to attach my homemade camera strap onto the lugs on my Canon 7D.

Yesterday, one of them "unwound" as I was pulling the camera around my body to take a shot. (Nothing fell since I was holding the camera.) Since they're playing a crucial role, I'd like to replace the random ones found around my house with some that are stronger.

Does anyone know where one can buy split-rings that are well built (but not too large to fit in the lugs)? Is there an easier solution in my situation that I'm not seeing?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Might try local locksmith/retail store?

Home depot etc?

Local fishing bait shop. Some of the lures have small diameter rings made to be quite strong. Also anywhere that makes keys normally has an assortment of different sized rings.

However, unless you put some heat shrink on there, you'll always risk it opening up because of the lever action it has when twisted.

If I were you, I would look into a better way of doing that. That carabiner is way overkill, I have one on my key ring.

Lowes and I'm sure HD have gadgets display showing various styles. Split rings of several sizes, might require buying gadget to get size you want. Small carabiners make detaching from camera easy and quick.

If you get the Peak Design anchors, which I like, I think they now come with some nice oval split rings.

(They no longer recommend putting their anchor cords directly through the lugs built into the cameras because they worry not all those are smooth enough.)

Re: Source for strong split rings?

I've been using these adapters for a good many years now, then using a small snap clip on the strap:

lately I've gone to small S-biners on some of my straps -- be sure to get the steel biners with lock. Note that these are too large to use directly on the camera.

Works for me, but use at your own risk. I've had no problems with either product but my cameras and lenses are relative light m4/3 gear.

Thank you! Those op-tech adapters look like just what I was looking for. Glad that such a product exists and that this forum exists for finding it.
