Replace old P & S with new one for snorkeling?

I go snorkeling 2x per year using a Panasonic Lumix TS4, purchased in 2013.  It works fine (for photos and a little video), but I am curious if an Olympus TG-5 will be a noticeable upgrade for me?  I don't know much about photography yet. How do those compare for a beginner?

Thank you!

Hi, I would say yes:)

I took my TG-5 out a few times in Kefalonia last year, I am an absolute novice as far as technique goes but here are some unedited jpegs anyway I have tried to give you a rounded selection of above and below water so you can best understand its capabilities, hope this helps.

I can answer any questions u might have about its functions

I think I need to work on my under water colour balance! But it was quite dull down there.

Full optical zoom from same position as pic above.

Re: Replace old P & S with new one for snorkeling?

Hi Carin

I have a TG-5 which I like(d).  I have had it for about 1.5 years and 4 weeks ago I took it snorkling on Great Barrier.  First time underwater - and got decent shots.  Probably need to learn about underwater photography and cant blame camera ;-).  What got me really annoyed was that my flash stopped working...only noticed after 2 weeks.

Turned out to be waterdamage to the motherboard and flash.  Now I KNOW  I had checked everythng was clean and closed before going in the water.  I was in the water for about 2 hours .  The manual says " water resistant up to 15 m for 1 hour".  I sort of imagined the pressure at 15 m would make a difference to the time.  It also says "Replace all seals every year".  Now that is a big ask I think.

The repair is costing me the same as an underwater housing ...but I never imagined I needed a special housing for an underwater camera for a 2 hr surface snorkel.

Don't know if I got a lemon...or the 1 hr in the water and replacement seals every year is what caused it.

Worth considering before buying for underwater use I think.

If you shot your underwater images in RAW, you can do quite a lot with them in post to fix the white balance and clarity.   They look pretty salvageable to me.

I've seen some pretty nice dive pics from TG5's, particularly macro.

As for the o-rings, I see a lot of recommendations for service that seem ridiculous.  Probably covering their ass recommendations.    For instance, greasing an o-ring after every dive or every day.   Perhaps that was from a time where grease wasn't as good?   In my mind, servicing o-rings that often means a greatly increased risk of getting a hair or sand mote underneath it.

The idea behind greasing an o-ring is to allow it to twist in its groove when large pressures are applied to it.  Without grease there is the possibility of it tearing instead of twisting.  I suppose the most likely time for that would be at depth and maximum pressure, but it's a guess on my part.

I've had a number of dive housings now, none of which ever leaked.  (Strobes are another story).  Canon mostly:

SD630

SD870is

SD870is (second one, for wife to use at same time)

s95

s120

RX100 II (Nauticam housing)

Nikon D810 (Nauticam housing)

Nikon D850 (Nauticam housing)

All of the Canon point-n-shoots were used for at least two years with probably 5-10 dive trips each.   In every case, the cameras failed above water when the zoom gear broke on them and you could no longer retract the lens.

Housing maintenance:  I greased the o-rings once a year before the first dive trip.

O-ring maintenance is over-specced.   However often you do it, do it in a bright light with care and don't rush.   I've had the battery compartments leak on two strobes over 10 years, and I'm pretty sure it's because I did a rush job on replacing batteries between dives.   At least it didn't ruin the strobes because they were built with sealed battery compartments.

I think you were just unlucky.  I once lost my TG-5 in six feet of water while snorkeling in Samoa (long story).  Came back and found it the next day and it worked fine.  And, as PHXAZCRAIG suggests, it's probably not due to failure to replace the seals.
