Should have told him to put his money where his mouth is and bet a new lens on it if he’s wrong. 😉

I am traveling to Japan on 29th March. I really hope Sony releases the new fw before that.

I'd be very apprehensive about updating my camera's firmware just days before a big trip.

What else can your Sony representative tell you, in general terms, about what we don't know?

It will be out by then. Teds camera in Sydney is having a firmware flashing session on the 28th of March.

As for flashing a firmware on the eve of a big trip, it is a "courageous decision" (a famous phrase from the "Yes, Minister" TV series).

You be crazy to update your firmware on day 1  It's the biggest fw ever and is bound to have bugs

You are a risk taker unless you also have a second camera

Hopefully new Imaging Edge Mobile would come with the new firmware as well. Sony said it will be available March 2019. PlayMemories Mobile has too many issues with Android 9.

Awesome! I’m counting the hours.

My question: are there enough A9 users in the world to cause the Sony firmware servers to slow down and crash?

<yeah I’m just kidding>

But my real question: hopefully we don’t lose all our existing camera settings?

(My guess is that’s likely given how major this upgrade sounds)

(awesome TV show as was the sequel: “Yes Prime Minister”)

Just don’t unplug it in the middle, Sony have already tested it on hundreds of A9’s so it’s pretty safe.

What on earth is a firmware flashing session? Sounds painful But I guess if it gets people to come to the store that’s the real motivation... oh and it’s not “instant”.

That is my guess as well. And I think it is a good idea that more photo stores should pick up. They can sell sensor cleaning and other stuff at the same time as well.

The only time that I’ve had issues upgrading firmware in devices has been when I jumped multiple versions (something that the firmware developers don’t always test very well - they tend to assume that you’re on the previous version).

I guess if a person needs a camera store to upgrade their firmware for them they’re likely to be quite out of date so it might well be worth it.

I am afraid we will have to re customize the settings.

I am afraid we will have to re customize the settings.

I think we’ll all want to recustomize anyway.

A separate Eye-AF button will no longer be needed. So my AEL button will be freed up for something else.

Plus there are so many other new things to go through. I think my current settings will definitely change after the update.

So I have just installed version 5. No issues except that I had one false starts when it insisted on a fully charge battery.

Yes... it's back to completely "new camera" mode. I even needed to enter the time zone, date and time again (and all my customization changes are lost).
