RP shows potential for a small and light high quality FF system
2

This size comparison shows the great potential for the R system to include a high quality small camera combined with small and affordable high quality lenses, like the RF 35, that would be very convenient for travel, and could also be used with larger RF L or EF L lenses when needed. The RF 35 has a larger aperture, macro capabilities and is reported to be sharper. The RP is the first step, however it is reusing an old sensor design and has limited RF lens options. It is surprising that one kit option for the RP is the EF 24-105 STM with adapter because there is not an economical RF normal zoom.

RP (745 gr) versus 5D4 (1135 gr)

I would love to get a future camera the size of the RP with a high DR, higher resolution sensor, fast eye continuous auto focus, high end EVF like the R, and IBIS. It seems to me that it would not need to be noticeably larger or heavier. The idea of a small body with optional grips that can be added when needed is much better than having to carry a larger and heavier camera like the 5D4 all the time.

Right now, most of the announced RF lenses are heavy and expensive large aperture L lenses. It will take some time to see quality smaller RF lenses such as a 16-35 or 15-40 f4, a retractable 24-85 f3.5-5.6, a 70-300 f4-5.6 and other primes like 50 f1.8, 100 f2, or a pancake 35 f2.8, as a very compact and light alternative. Non IS lenses taking advantage of IBIS could be more economical and lighter.

Canon could sell more high end FF cameras by having smaller size options in addition to larger bodies like the R, more similar to current DSLRs. I wonder how long it would take before the R system includes those bodies and lenses to attract customers coming from 4/3, 1" or phone cameras. Some of those new customers would later buy RF L lenses and larger cameras.

Your comparison has made me realise that the R series does not have an LCD on the top of the camera.  (...wake up at the back!)

So, is this information an option available in the viewfinder?

Actually you have a choice between a separate mode dial with visible click-stopped markings;

or a top plate LCD and a button to toggle the rear control wheel into a mode dial with read-out in the LCD;

All the exposure information is available in the viewfinder.

The Eos R has a LCD screen on top, the RP has not

You can in both camera,s ,see all the info you want in the EVF  …

Re: RP shows potential for a small and light high quality FF system

I have been waiting for such a stabilized combo for years. I own the EOS M plus the 22/2 (not IS) and have used it for travel a few times. I wanted something better though.

I do not own the R or the RP but I have studied many R or RP plus 35/1.8 IS photos. I am really disappointed by the lens. The samples on IR do not look good at all. A lot of PF, or whatever it is plus horrible bokeh. With all that talk about the shiny new mount and the 35/1.8 used as a poster child of it, seeing this mediocrity is very discouraging. I will keep waiting.

Can't tell you much about purple fringing, as I haven't used the lens in situations where it is more likely to show up, but so far, the bokeh in my shots has been very smooth.

You see the poor bokeh when your subject and background are farther away.
