E-M1 or GX8

Does it make sense for you to get one of these oldies?

I have to replace my GX7 because of the infamous thumbwheel problem. The GX9, GX80/85, EM5.2 and PenF don't handle very nice (grip too small).

Of course there is the G80/81/85, but it is more expensive than either.

How much would you pay for them in good condition with thess than 15.000 shutter actuations?

As one who has one of "these oldies" (GX8), for me it has been a great camera.

Wonderful results for almost 3 years.

For the EM1, well, Danny just posted, asking jokingly, if he needs a new camera!

I haven't priced...

I just 'upgraded' from the GX85 to the GX8 and its in another league, the build the feel, the view finder, I loved the GX85 but I am besotted with the GX8, brilliant camera!

Re: I wouldn't hesitate

I just bought a like new GX8 with a shutter count of 670 from KEH for $560. That seemed like a good price since it was being sold by a reputable dealer with 6 month warranty. eBay prices might be even better if you are willing to buy from an unknown seller without warranty.

To my mind:

- Somewhat better sensor
- Better menu's
- Better EVF (tilting is nice), larger
- Better LCD (to me)
- Much better Video 4K
Downside is the suhttershock which was solved with FW update in a way (and it has 12 bit RAw with eshutter).

GX8 no question.

The viewfinder is just amazing. I got one, like-new 2nd-hand local for €500.

An often heard comment that it might be too big, that is hogwash, I would not have minded at all if it had just a tad bigger grip.

I had a GX8 about 18 months ago, but was unable to use it (left overseas) so bought an EM1.1, new from Peter Jones.

After a few months I got the GX8 back and had to decide which one to keep.

I liked the EVF on the GX8, I never had problems with shutter shock (although I could reproduce it, it never causes a problem in practice) I think that the GX8 focusing was generally faster, especially with some Panasonic lenses. I did find that sometimes it missed focus for no apparent reason (with 14-140) I didn't find that the tilting EVF was very useful except to keep my nose out of the LCD. I didn't like the fully articulating screen very much. I did not have any real problems with the GX8, there is one function button above the rear selector which gets pushed very easily and is very annoying (I forget now exactly what it does)

However I found that the EM1 was a more satisfying camera to use. Although the menus are more complex, once set up I rarely access them. I find that the focus especially with Olympus lenses is fine and doesn't suffer from the misses. I like the tilting screen better. I did have the usual problem with the rear adjustment wheel on the EM1, fixed by Olympus under guarantee. There is also a potential EVF problem, if you have it set for long sight, and the sun shines into it (the phosphor can get burnt) Some people have reported loose neck strap lugs, but it has not affected me yet.

Personally I find that the shape of the EM1 suits me better but you might like the GX8

I sold the GX8 and have been a very satisfied EM1 user since, in fact I have another nearly new one as a spare. (<500 clicks)

Is it still a good buy? I think you should read the 'mirror lessons' comparison between the mark I and mark ii to see where they think the advantages of the new camera are and whether they apply to you.

However I think that if I was in the market for a new body I would look carefully at the G9, but the larger size might put me off!

If you want to see some samples, I have a current thread here on 'Photos or Lightroom' which has some examples from the EM1, with the lowly, but very practical 14-150 (which is water resistant, the Panasonic equivalent may have slightly better IQ but is not WR)

I don't think you would go badly wrong with either, but you need to check the specs and see which you will be more comfortable with

good luck with your choice

Sorry forgot about price, I think you could get a mint EM1 for around $450, not sure any more about GX8, but you can check on Ebay and KEH

I'd try to get a G9. I know this is probably a big leap price wise over the other cameras you are considering. Maybe you can find one used. At least in the US, it is on sale now. I've had 6 or 7 different m43 cameras (not the 2 you are looking at) and this camera by far is the best and by a huge margin.

I wouldn't buy used personally, unless it really looks real low mileage. Lots of reports of problems with the EM1 (MK I version), but I have no personal experience. GX8 seems like a nice camera on paper, but it seems to have an IS system that is not very good and some reports of shutter shock problems.

To me Panasonic got it right with the G80/85. Better shutter and IS mechanism. This is very important. They wouldn't redesign those important components if there were not problems with them. The only major thing the G80/85 really lack is the latest sensor. If you are Ok with the 16MP sensor in the G80/85 I'd recommend that camera over the other 2.

If somehow you can afford it, get a G9. This is the camera where they finally got everything right. An EM1 II is similar (but not quite as good) spec wise, but more $ and I'd take the G9 over it even if they were the same price.

I feel the G9 is sort of a camera for life where everything else in m43 is just not quite there yet. It is that good.

The GX8 has been kind of having a resurgence of popularity, lately, in the DP Review, spin zone.

What I can testify to is that the GX8 is a much better grade camera then the GX85 and GX9. I have owned both (the Gx9 very briefly). I have been using the GX8 for several months now and enjoying the camera' s performance. Being a bit larger than the aforementioned cameras is a good thing for mid-sized zoom lenses, a larger grip, and a beautiful larger EVF. I bought my GX8 from Adorama for $600 USD. other than a slightly beat up box, the GX8 looked brand new.

I am very happy with the GX8 and recommend it, highly.

I love the colour rendering of the GX8, especially of colored fabric and bird plumage. I always use mine for paid jobs like parties, weddings, Christenings etc. I used mine yesterday at a birthday party as it happens.

Re: E-M1 or GX8

I currently have both. The EM1.1 was my first MFT camera, to replace an aging E30, and it is a very nice camera, it handled and focused all of my FT lenses as well as the E30. Wanting to try more video I was looking for a Panasonic body ...GX8, G or GX85, etc. Found a used GX8 online for $550 4 months ago.

Very happy with the purchase, I still use the EM1 with the 50-200 SWD lens, but all of my Olympus MFT lenses work fine on the GX8.

I prefer the handling of the EM1, but that is likely because I have more experience with it. I do prefer the tilting display more than the GX8 articulating type, buts its a minor concern and not a big deal.

The EVF on GX8 is fantastic, but the grip could be a little deeper, again a minor issue. For me the EM5 and the EM10 were too small, and lacked a deep enough grip.

Both cameras are still very capable, both weathered sealed. Only guessing, but a used EM1.1 should be available for less than $500, probably closer to $400. A GX8 will be more..between $500-600.

That is something I can confirm, comparing EM 5.2 and GX7 , even with Olympus lenses!

I did find that sometimes it missed focus for no apparent reason (with 14-140) I didn't find that the tilting EVF was very useful except to keep my nose out of the LCD.
