G11 brought back to life
1

A broken wrist has meant I have had to put my Canon 5D IV away for a while. Much too heavy to hold in my present state, especially with my favourite 100-400 lens and x1.4 III extender attached. I thought that would mean no photography for me, but then I remembered my little Canon Powershot G11, about 10 years old and which I haven't used for ages. I took it out of its dusty box, realised the battery didn't even need charging despite a long lay-off, and managed a few (rather painful) shots. Only when I was looking at them on my iMac did I realise what a super little camera the G11 is. Of course, it can't do the same job as a 5D, but it is very capable in many situations and shooting in RAW means I can play with them in Lightroom. For me, it has been a life-saver. I promise never to leave it unforgotten again!

Here's a couple of shots taken with it in the last couple of days, broken wrist and all. I call the first one "Spring chicken."  Incidentally, little or no Lightroom manipulation needed on either of these.

I don't know where you are, but with several feet of snow on the ground and this morning's temp of -3° F (-19° C), your pictures are most welcome.

I have a G10 which I still use on a regular basis.  Other than being a little short on pixels, it still does a fine job.

Hello. I'm in Lancashire, UK. We've just had the warmest February on record. An incredible 20C yesterday, our warmest winter's day ever. Something's not right with our weather! Hope my pics brought you a touch of Spring, and glad to hear your G10 is still serving you well. Also hope your big freeze ends soon.

BTW, in my original post meant to say I promise not to leave my G11 unused again.

Agreed, the G9, G10, G11, G12, G15 and G16 have all been, and still are superb photographic instruments. Opinion based on personal use apart from G16.

Re: G11 brought back to life

I had an A610 which developed a sticky shutter beyond economic repair. After some agonizing I bought a slightly used second-hand G11, which I liked very much and had been using happily for many years - until one day the dreaded lens-retraction error stroke.

If only it could be brought back to life!

Canon service Budapest was not able (or willing) to repair it: too old, no spare parts available. It, sitting on my desk and gathering dust, reminds me my happy days with it...

Sigh.

Re: G11 brought back to life

Nice to hear good news after an accident! The same with G10, after 8 months battery seems full, and camera working as new. Almost got hold of cheap extra battery and charger, but someone must have made a bid. Someones mentioned the cold, G10 can take more than me. Maybe -8 when it froze, but came on after a while in the inner pocket! - Guess you will not lose many shots before you can use larger cameras!

Nice to hear that other people love their Powershot cameras. I'm so pleased with
re-discovering my old G11 that it feels I've got a brand new camera. Another chicken pic taken with the G11.

Great shot, and at iso400, clean as a whistle on my screen. Thanks for posting.

G10 Chicken Picture

Bought our son-in-law an Orion smoker for Christmas a few years ago.  He christened it with these wings.  A quick grab shot before they disappeared.

Many thanks. I can see noise in a blue sky at ISO400, though, but I think you can get away with it with a dark background. It was a very dull day, too. Chickens are the only "wildlife" I can spot at the moment.
