Is SL2 a worthy upgrade from T2i
1

I shot film for several years -- 35mm and MF -- and prefer manual controls. I'm happy with the T2i for most situations -- don't shoot action, prefer landscape and macro. But, in any case, I see that the SL2 is fairly inexpensive and may be a worthy upgrade, however I'm not sure. Any info appreciated.

yes much better sensor much better dynamic range ...an improvement with ISO ..live view/video  AF will be in a different league ...the kit lens will be much sharper than  your old kit lens ...if you still use a kit lense . much bigger buffer .touch screan...5 FPS .the only thing that wont have improved to much is the AF

I don't use the kit lens. Currently use the 40mm STM and 60mm macro, good sharp lenses. I assume they would fit on the the SL2.

yes...i have the SL1 and with the 24 or 40mm pancake it will fit in a jacket pocket

Most certainly.

The SL2 has a newer 24MP sensor which is much better than your 18MP in terms of low light performance, dynamic range and sheer resolution obviously.

The SL2 has a DIGIC7 processor which when Canon did the DIGIC6 (which is newer than your T2i) Canon overhauled the JPEG noise reduction engine. The SL2 will handle situations in the dark/indoors your T2i would just choke in. Your images in low light will be 100% better due to this, and then more so due to the sensor.

SL2 has better metering, AWB, JPEG sharpness, sensitivity in the center AF point. It can do DPAF video, has a fully articulating screen, the body itself is smaller and lighter.

The SL2 "beats" the T2i just across the board.

It's also pretty cheap "refurbished" which is often new, brown box overstock.

The new 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is quite sharp btw. Do try to get one with the bundled lens. I'm not one for kit lenses but it's pretty good.

However I did own an SL2 for a short stent, it's very formidable. And for the price, it's a steal.

The T2i is no slouch btw. Don't feel you have to upgrade. But is it worth it? Coming from a T2i, yes, 2 thumbs up.

Re: Is SL2 a worthy upgrade from T2i

I'm still using one of my two Canon T2i (550D) cameras.  I started using a Canon T7i (800D) camera (which is basically the same generation as the Canon SL2 (200D) camera).  There are enough improvements in all that time which make it important to me.  For landscapes in sunny locations as I show below, you probably won't notice a lot of difference.  I haven't done any side by side testing.  I probably should do that before I upgrade any further.

Canon T2i (550D) camera

Canon T7i (800D) camera...same hill at a different time with another lens.

Canon T7i (800D) camera at ISO8000 after the sun had set.

Again....

Since you like manual controls, I suggest you look at the 77d.

It's compact like the Rebel series, but has a fuller complement of controls and focus points.

Yes they will work perfectly.  My favourite lenses on my SL2 are the 24mm pancake 40mm pancake 10-18 stm and the 60mm macro.

The SL2 is a wonderful small camera.

Agree, the Sl2 is a great little fun camera to use.  I believe it is much better than the T21

No, not really, that’s a gross exaggeration. Digic is just the name of Canon’s camera cpu

Consider the M50 with EF to EF-m Adapter

Yes, but if you check the change log (and images across the web) you'll note that if you're a JPEG shooter, noise reduction got an overhaul in DIGIC6 which the T2i is pre-DIGIC6. That alone is big potatoes.

SL2 has better metering, AWB, JPEG sharpness, sensitivity in the center AF point. It can do DPAF video, has a fully articulating screen, the body itself is smaller and lighter.

Although I agree with you that an M50 is an upgrade from a SL2, that's not what the OP asked (and may be outside the OP's budget I gather from the questioning of whether an SL2 is worth it implies perhaps the SL2 is already a financial reach for the OP).

+12 for the SL2 upgrade (for all the reasons mentioned).

Your autofocus will improve also.  Canon changed their AF algorithms across the board starting with the T4i, and the keeper percentage rose substantially (IME).

Indeed, it’s amazing the difference between a SL2 and T6, night and day. Both are current offerings yet the SL2 slaughters it and it’s much newer than the T2i, all the more the SL2 is going to supersede the T2i.

Re: Is SL2 a worthy upgrade from T2i

I am hoping you have bought your camera by now as I am late to this thread.  For all of the reasons already mentioned, it will be a terrific upgrade. I actually like it better than a 6ti I use for work.  It is a great little camera that is very sharp. I use it for photographing birds from my kayak. I rarely use it except in boats of all sizes, but I took it on a trip to visit family recently where I knew photo ops would be limited, so it didn't seem to make sense to take a larger camera.  I loved using it because it is so simple and just plain takes great photos.  My only complaint is trying to use it in some funky lighting in a room at work where we hold conferences (but I haven't been happy with anything I have used there yet).

I just got the rp and I have exactly the same feeling about that camera as a full frame mirrorless. If you really want to splurge, you might want to check that one out.

I think you will be amazed though how much better the sl2 is from what you have even though I am sure the 2ti is a great camera that still takes good photos.  The camera world has been evolving much quicker than the computer world lately.
