Wanted to add a Panasonic to my Olympus M4/3rds kit
5

The G7 was on sale from Panasonic including the 14-42 and 45-150 kit lenses. The price looked right  and I figured hey give some M4/3rds love to Panasonic since  have been a big convert to Olympus since going M4/3rds in 2016.

I really did not need another camera as I have an Oly EM-1 and EM-10MKII with a good assortment of lenses. But since Panasonic an Olympus M4/3rds are interchangable and again the price was right  I took the plunge.

Great M4/3rds camera the G7 is especially given its price point. Feels good in my hands. solidly built given its a ballistic plastic design. It took a bit of getting use to ergonomically as I am steeped in Olympus  OMD world, but it all comes to feeling and working good given some play time. It's an extremely customizable camera and should fit most uses needs as such.

The evf viewfinder and back display are both  great to my eyes and expectations. The evf rivals my EM-1 in general size and clarity, it's a bit larger than my EM-10MKII evf. I've come to  enjoy good evf's and IMO most mirrorless cameras in the last few years have evf's good enough for most to not miss optical viewfinders. The swivel back display is cool and different than the pivoting up/down displays of my EM-1 and EM-10MKII. Not sure if full articulating back LCD is   better, but it's different.

I like Olympus menus and the Super Control Panel  option. For me it's good mojo. The G7 menues are still in learning for me but are enjoyable and easy to use. Half in one, 6 in the other. Both brands do a credible job getting info and usability to the users.

16mp is IMO for say 99% of ALL photographers likely more than  enough. I can  make HUGE images with well processed files on my Oly set up and the G7 is comparable in image quality. 9/10  photographers  rarely if ever make actual prints let alone enlargements, so 16 mp is over kill for most any  displays used today and in the near future. Yes, I see the emotional zeal of more MP  and of course one can get more MP in M/4/3rds today as well as APS-C or 35mmFF. But for me as of now I can  live happily with 16MP... After all about 15 years ago I  and MOST  photographers were shooting  including paid professional jobs with 6-8MP DSLRs and NO CLIENTS COMPLAINED!

The G7 was added to my kit, first  for the price  was right, I felt I'd like the camera and I do  and I wanted a new camera to just play with and use as well as give some support to Panasonic as I love the whole system design concept  of M4/3rds and felt along with Olympus that Panasonic should get some of my business.

I like my G7 its a nice compliment to my existing Olympus kit.

Re: Wanted to add a Panasonic to my Olympus M4/3rds kit

Very good! I had a G7 until last summer when I traded it in for a G9.  Honestly, I had to think about that.  The G7 is a reasonably simple and fun camera.  The G9 is not so simple, but after learning enough about it to know what I can choose not to mess with, it is fun and has better JPEG color.

I shot many very good pictures with the G7.

I encourage you (and anyone else with any camera, really) to shoot RAW + JPEG FINE.  If the JPEG looks lovely, great! You're don't have to develop the raw.  On the other hand if you think you can make a better JPEG, you've got the raw file to work with.

Re: Wanted to add a Panasonic to my Olympus M4/3rds kit

I did the same, although i own already a gm5 and a G6,

i wanted  to add the g7 to my gear.

soni did purchase amgood used kit that oncluded the  versatile 14-140.

As i am used to my olympus bodies, the G7

doesn’t feel quite as robust, albeit the grip feels good.

the evf is on par with my m10ii however ot lags a bit behind in terms of refresh rate (apparetnly).

LCD is great and so is DFD which appears to lock focus faster than most of my oly bodies in s-af.

all in all a nice addition
