Looks like a decent super-zoom for its price, but not my cup of tea.

5.6 at 50mm. So darker than 14-150 and 14-140.

Shooting in great light with this lens does make a difference but the bokeh and isolation of close ups is not the greatest....

Typical superzoom.  Aperture closes down real fast.   IQ at long end is just so so.

At $899 they'd have to have a 50% off sale to even get me to think about it.  Waay overpriced for its capabilities.

Oly continues to create new cameras and lenses I have absolutely no interest in.  Batting 100% there.

Here's an exercise: compare the 12-200 and 12-50 apertures at the long end.

Cheers,

Coming from my 35mm film days, Having the field of view that is equivalent to 24-400mm in one lens is simply amazing. The superzooms that were out back then (1990s) were often in the 28-200 range and the IQ was not far from hopeless. The film speed I'd have to use with such a lens would be in the 200 to 800 iso range. These films were outperformed by the 5 to 8mp DSLRs that came soon after. Of course, MFT started at 12mp. We have it pretty good!

OTOH, is the price for such a convenience. I use the 12-32 kit lens and the 40-150R PF (plastic fantastic) which are cheap. Apertures slow down quick on superzooms and it is already f/6.2 at 100mm where it is f/5 on the PF. The PF retains decent IQ so is perhaps comparable the the 12-200 at similar FL. OTOH, the 12-200 appears to be mechanically a better made lens with a bit more reach. I'd have to weigh the convenience, cost and a few other factors before deciding.

From the samples I saw in this review, center sharpness is good and I am overall satisfied with what I see as a hobbyist photographer. Personally, although not an Olympus user (apart from a TG5), if they bundle this lens with the expected EM5 III I think it will be a very interesting kit. Some dilemmas that are coming up:

1) How is the lens compared to the 75-300 or 100-300 at same FL? Would cropping to 300 produce a similar result?

2) How is the lens compared to the 14-150 and 14-140?

3) How is this kit compared to the 1" super zooms (RX10/3, FZ1000)?

Re: Robin Wong's 12-200 review is out

I will admit I have a weakness for superzooms. This one looks really good but I'm struggling a little bit with it. 12mm is nice yes and so is up to 200mm. My problem is the Panasonic 14-140 II is so good, I can't figure out why I'd spend this much to replace it. Maybe if they had pushed this thing out to 300mm like the RX10 Mark 3 (600 equiv)?

That's a great strategy: identify these trolls publicly and inoculate the rest of us least we take any of their comments seriously.

Now back to the 12-2000 review. Isn't this Robin Wong's bottom line?:

"While the lens may not give you the typical Olympus razor sharp image output at the longer end, it performs very well in the 12-100mm zoom range. If you are looking for absolute sharpness, there are PRO grade lenses with superior optics to consider."

Given how pro Olympus he is, and how effusive most of his “reviews” are that conclusion does not fill me with hope Though for a 12-2000 not bad at all
