Is it still worth it to buy EF lens for eos R ?

Guys, I'm sceptical. I Have an EOS R with RF50mm and some of EF lens like 85mm 1.2, 24-105, 100-400L etc. I want to buy the 70-200 2.8 so bad, but I don't think it's worth it because  the RF line will arive this year. Would you still buy it ? And I'm thinking to buy the Ef 35mm 1.4 too. But again, why i'm buying EF lens if it's past! Damn, don't know what to do. The new lens will arive later this year. To muchh time

If you really need the lens, well...

I bought the 70-300 L and have *no* regrets.

Good rules with electronics and gadgets are that if you need it now and can afford it, buy it now in the full knowledge that in a couple of months or years there will be a cheaper and better one. If you can do without it for now then wait until you really need it.  And renting, in the medium to long term, is much more expensive than buying.  If you don't really need it then it's not worth worrying about it.

I would wait unless I needed it for a job that would support the cost.

Re: Is it still worth it to buy EF lens for eos R ?

The new 70-200 looks delectable in its own right.  If you want a shorter lens (albeit, one that externally zooms), then wait for it because its own characteristics.

Otherwise, there seems to be little disadvantage to running an EF lens with the control ring adapter.

I'm continuing to use my EF lenses with a single adapter kept on my EOS R.  That's because I've also got five EF mount cameras that I'm continuing to use.

But those cameras are long in the tooth and need to be put on a replacement schedule.  That means I either buy an adapter for each new R camera replacement and continue to use EF lenses, or run the replacement cycle as fast as my cash flow allows and buy new RF lenses.

Now that I've written it out, it's likely I'll just buy an adapter for each new camera.

Buy a used lens now, sell it when the new lens is available and think of the difference as a very inexpensive rental fee.

In a rough environment, the EF version might be better, because it has an internal zoom mechanism.

The RF version will probably be a better lens in every other way, but not that much better.   I would expect the difference to be like the difference between the EF and RF 24-105 or 35 IS.

It depends on what you strategy is. Are you 100% sure you stay on the RF mount, then take the RF70-200L as it will be superior to the existing ones. If you need a sort of a fallback to EF, case you dislike the performance of the R series after a while, then stick to the EF 70-200L

I absolutely would buy EF lenses, because there are so many good buys! In fact, since I got my first R for my business back in October, I have sold off any non-Canon glass and bought a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS, 16-35L F4 IS and 100L f/2.8 Macro IS. Of these three, the only one purchased new was the 100, and I bought that lens specifically for the portrait side of the business to be used a majority of the time on a 5D MKII in the studio. Last week I bought the 16-35L F4 IS to replace a 17-40L f4, which needs to be sent to CPS for tuning and will be put into a back-up bag. Because I shoot so much real estate and architecture, the 16-35 range suits my shooting style perfectly. The one lens that I really want to buy again would be the 100-400L f4.5-5.6 IS ( I made a bunch of money with that lens!). Even though I wouldn't use it that often, paying sub-$600 for a clean low use first gen copy is worth the money.

It depends, and in my opinion, if an RF version is coming up, then the answer is an easy no, wait for the RF version instead. Those glass will come with an all-new optical formula. For more exotic lenses like the upcoming Tamron 35-150mm 2.8-4 or Sigma's 20mm 1.4 and 105mm 1.4, then yes definitely worth it.

I Bought the EF 100-400 II for my EOS R. Mainly because I go on a Safari later this year but also because I don't know when the RF 100-400 will come out and I don't want to miss out on photo opportunities.

I will probably try to sell it when the RF Version comes out and shows a big enough improvement...

It depends on your other cameras if you have any. I continue to use my 5DSR for serious landscapes. RF lenses cannot be used on an EF mount. I purchased a 24 - 105
F4 with my EOS R, but I do not think I will purchase any new RF lenses for a while. I am very happy with the performance of my EF lenses with the adapter on my R.

I am looking at getting the ND filter equipped Canon adapter.  It would be nice to switch lenses and have the ND filter as part of the camera instead of one filter per lens.  So in that case, buying some EF lenses is preferred over the RF lenses.

Buy used EF lenses?  Buy used lenses as people purge their EF collection to buy the RF 50mm, RF 28-70mm, and the RF 70-200mm?

Absolutely, but only used ones! If you need that EF 70-200 so bad you will easily be able to find a used lens. Then when the RF lens arrives you can sell it, maybe without losing any money if you're lucky.
