HSS banding issue with EOS M5 + Godox TT600?

Has anyone experienced and solved this issue?

I have the TT600 paired with the X1T-C transmitter (not that it matters, but both Flashpoint rebranded) and I am getting banding issues when trying to use High Speed Sync.

Both the M5 and the X1T-C have the latest firmware.

I've read threads with Sony users having the same problem but their workaround was to turn off Electronic First Curtain Shutter. I'm almost sure the M5 doesn't have any settings like that.

Hi, did ever find a fix for this?

I have just encountered the same issue.

Thanks

No, canon doesn't add the option to disable efcs on their cameras. Which makes these cameras useless for high speed sync shooting. I also found this out the hard way....

+1 The M6ii gets panned a lot for not having EFCS, but I've found this fact to be an advantage in exactly this scenario.

I still shoot a lot of macro using flash (but not so much portraiture any more), so I do still find HSS very useful.

The M6II has a fully mechanical shutter. I’ve used HSS flash with it.

My experience is the Chinese branded flashes are not as good as OEM or METZ in my case.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/62840776

I would recommend OEM flash if you intend to shoot a lot of HSS.

HSS does work on the M5........

Right, so I had my tt350 and tt600 connected via the X1T-c. Initially I was testing my 600. At first i set the shutter to 1/4000 and hss on the flash but it banded. I then messed about with the x1tc custom settings and turned off second curtain sync (the 3 arrows, 2 white 1 black) bottom right of the display. After this the hss worked seamlessly on both flash. Also, when u press the info button on the camera to show all the settings, then change your shutter speed, anything above 1/200 and the flash symbol displays H for hss.

Not sure of the m50 but I would think the m6 mk1 works in the same way.

So you got no banding with the GODOX setup on HSS?

Re: HSS banding issue with EOS M5 + Godox TT600?

I did before I disabled the 2nd curtain sync on the x1tc. Now it works perfectly right up to 1/4000 on both flashes.

That's awesome to know, I've been eying a second hand m6 mkii.

The difference in usability between the M5 (which I shot with for 2 years) and the M6ii is like night and day. The M6ii can simply shoot anything you want, in darn near any conditions (IME in light so low you can’t even make out details). Being able to shoot stuff now that you would have had to turn down with an M5 is a very liberating experience.

And that’s with just the standard shooting modes with regular old Servo AF with a Spot focusing frame! I kid you not when I say that this little camera out-shoots every DSLR that I’ve ever used. And by a large margin.

On top of that, now go and enable Eye AF when shooting people, Tracking mode when shooting critters, the crazy-fast RAW Burst mode, the incredibly useful Focus Bracketing mode, or the completely silent E-Shutter (at 20 FPS no less) and you now have more capabilities than you know what to do with!!!

And how about shooting flash at 14 FPS with the mechanical shutter?! I simply tape the communication pins on the camera’s hotshoe (leaving just the larger x-sync terminal exposed). Set the flash to a lower power than full (I shoot flash with full manual settings anyways), and bam 14 FPS flash. Works fantastic for macros, or any subject that’s in motion (or not moving, of course). Plus doing this eliminates that pesky initial flash delay.

The compact Nissin i-series flashes are excellent for this (as is the inexpensive Godox/Flashpoint Zoom Mini), as they all have a nice external wheel adjustment for flash power. No need to dive into any menus to make flash adjustments. Plus they’re just the right size for the M Series!

Hope this sheds some light on the subject for you Miguel’!

I genuinely appreciate your feedback, and i can tell the camera makes you very happy
Would you be able to tell me what other burst options are there besides 14fps? typically cameras have a stop under the fastest burst available (like 7 fps or so)

With the Mechanical shutter: One Shot, 3 FPS, 7 FPS, 14 FPS.

With the Electronic shutter: One shot, 30 FPS (RAW Burst mode).

BTW I had a typo in my earlier post (E-shutter is 30 FPS, not 20).

7fps continuous sounds great to me, probably will have a larger buffer?

How do you find the display on the m6ii compared with m5/m6?

I have issues where if the scene is too dark (but I'm still able to see everything with the bare eye), the m5 display won't register it. Is this to do with light sensitivity of the sensor? It's a nightmare for astro when I'm trying to line up a foreground. Usually I have to shoot, then check and decompose etc because I have to guess.

Well, not a larger buffer, but a longer duration buffer.  Appx 4 seconds (RAW) vs. 2 seconds (RAW).

I'm assuming you have "Exposure Simulation" already disabled in the Menu for this type of shooting? Doing this helps a lot in low light and when using flash.

There will indeed be a low light limit for the display to function of course. You might find the electronic level useful (or a tripod-mounted one) for lining up a horizon. At night I usually wear a (multi-color) LED headlamp to help see by (RED LED). Also, a powerful LED flashlight is great for light painting. And the new portable color-temp-adjustable LED panels are great for illuminating nearby objects (you can change the kelvin temperature, and there is no banding).

As far as side-by-side comparisons go, I don't have my M5 any more (and my M6 is at work). Sorry about that.

Yes, simulation turned off. It was the low light limit which I was curious of. I think this is to do with the sensor sensitivity rating but can't find anything for the m5. I do see cameras quoted at times as rated to -3EV, -4EV etc. I would assume the m6ii would be a better performer based on review.

Thanks

Well there are the autofocus floor light-level ratings.  They are loosely related to sensor sensitivity, but not necessarily a direct indicator.  The M5 was rated at -1 EV, the M6 Mark II at -5 EV.  Which actually resulted in a huge improvement in AF (IME).  I don’t have the dynamic range floor ratings in front of me, but there should be improvements seen in those charts too.

However a person would need the two cameras side by side to see if the display was any different, as there are firmware-imposed restrictions on the camera’s low-light displaying (FPS).  I can say that the M6ii’s “Display Performance” setting has no effect on the low light brightness of the display though.

Maybe someone who still has both cameras can provide more input.
