A week in Snowdonia
43

Evening everyone,

Just before Christmas I made a deal with myself, i could buy myself a Canon Pro 100s but only if i went out shooting more.  Id been watching youtube vids on printing and it really did look like fun, also it would be really nice to have my own prints on the walls of our first house.

So far this year im been out on 3 occasions to shoot, with the most recent being a week in Snowdonia, Wales. It was our first time going and the mountains really are beautiful. We had pretty good weather, some mist and low cloud for moody shots, then a couple of clear sunrises and sunsets.

Im really proud of these and i do hope you like them, i cant wait to print them out over the next week to see how they come out. Its the Photography Show in the UK in March so im hoping to get a good deal on some A3+ Fotospeed paper and then i can start hanging them on our walls.

Very nice indeed to nice to languish away on your harddrive:-)  I used to love the paper from Red River in Texas lots of choice for surface and tone and good prices. No connection to me but a reliable vendor. The ceo of Fuji was quoted as saying many young people have never seen prints hence their facination with the Instax instant prints. Thank for sharing your work.

Lovely shots, you'll love printing those! Printing can be very rewarding ( and frustrating!) , at least it is for me. It somehow stopped my misguided focus on hardware and has given me back that 'I made that' feeling. Putting a print in some one's hands or on a wall feels satisfying in a way sharing on the web/social media never did. Its odd, but I shoot fewer frames than before printing my own work, but I think better ones.

Re: A week in Snowdonia

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Started printing them out last night and I’m really happy. Just testing which look best on which paper.

I cant wait until I have some A3+ papers, then they will have some real impact I think. Will post some more pics when I get them framed if people are interested.

Re: A week in Snowdonia

I like the first image of the Llanberis tree .. it really shades the second one, making it look less punchy.

And I prefer the pano of the mountain (I don't recognise it ...) though I think you might try to make the foreground slightly less magenta to separate it a little more and to give it more definition.

And as for paper ... my suggestions to try are NST Bright White (matt art paper) and a semi-gloss/lustre paper like PF Lustre (though I'm currently chewing through Permajet Oyster!) for those pics where detail is more important. I've certainly been using the NST much more recently.

I've not had much luck with the baryta papers - but that could just be my technique with them. That may simply show that it is possible to have too many papers available for use and just not being able to master the foibles of any of them.

I'm not sure which photographers actually do this, but many will print out an image and "leave it to mature" on their wall for at least a week before deciding if they like it or not. My equivalent is on a large table, though I need to keep turning the prints form time to time!

Enjoy

I second your love of Red River papers. They provide regular discounts, and much printing technique information. Most importantly they provide custom printer/paper icc profiles rather than the generic printer manufacturer's profiles.

I have a particular fondness for the Red River Polar Gloss Metallic paper.

Re: A week in Snowdonia

Lovely shots - congratulations.

I think the first and fourth are my favourites. The first one seems stronger than the second to me because the evenness of the tones brings out the counterbalancing shapes better, and the fourth one is sort of the reverse - the variation in tones gives a great sense of depth and balance. In fact those two would look great side by side.

With me getting the printer just before Christmas, I was able to get all the Fotospeed test packs as presents from family.

I printed and got the custom icc profiles for every paper. The NST bright white is my favourite so far, the texture and colours look great. Have also used the baryta for the first tree image, the colour and contrast is really nice. Think I will print that one at A3+ when get some.

The pano was just one imagine with the 14mm, it’s looking at Tryfan from lake Ogwen.
