I am cross shopping A73, a6400, and Fuji X-t30 for better c-af for candids of my twin toodlers. Shortof the em-1x, what is next best for fast moving kids?

Panasonic G9 and GH5 line, Olympus E-M1 II.

When shooting people with my E-M1 II, I use face and eye detect exclusively and focus on composition. It has been very reliable for me, never missed a shot. It even works quite well with Metabones and the Sigma 18-35, although that combo is less reliable because AF is simply not as fast as with native lenses. The only lens with which this does not seem to work well is Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, because it just cannot do C-AF.

I have found that as long as the person is tighter cropped, no more than waist to top of head, eye/ face af is very good on my EM1.2. Full length or further away, and wide open with 12-100 or 12-40, so not super challenging for DOF, results are not dependable. Good enough for social media but disastrous for say a wedding job.

I use G9 and face/eye detect AF is awesome - even blind point and shoot achieves better results than standard AF (not to mention manual focus). I did not think this feature will be useful at all, but I rely on it now in social settings (or differently said, it is a great crutch for my lack of focusing skills in such moments).

Also had a chance to test this feature with Sony A7 and it was a confusing experience. Face detection in similar scenery was unreliable, even if a face was detected and outlined the AF locked elsewhere or could not keep up focusing on the person - not reliable, and thus not impressive at all.  Hopefully Sony improved it in the later models (A7 ii and iii).

Can't comment on C-AF, I don't use it.

I am ready to go multi system and get something better for candids and portraits, but obviously staying with M43 would save buying more lenses, but I probably would wind up getting a fast focusing 15 or 17, since my 20 is so first gen. Already have 12-35 2.8, and 45 1.8. and 35-100, and 7.5, and....

So what, if any M43 body will be close to a6400? Even Fuji's latest gen reviews pretty well.

So with my G7, I usually use the single autofocus with the smallest box size available that is not a single point.  on the 42.5f1/7 and 25f1.7 i'm generally amazed at how fast it focuses.  I will sometimes use CAF with the face detect/eye tracking and i think its awfully neat, but I've never missed shots in social settings due to it being somehow not fast enough.

I guess YMMV, but I'm madly in love with the speed of AF of my G7 and panny lenses.

My advice is to read carefully reviews that you believe are trustworthy, and, be very very careful with claims made by posters here.  Especially pay attention to problems mentioned in AF tests.  They, the problems, even occasional ones, are more likely to be true and significant  than claims that one can shoot this or that with their camera.  There are often fans who will post many photos to prove that something can be done...   You can get a good clear shot with even very old cameras with enough trials and careful setups.  Trust yourself and the more independent reviewers.
