Does the 3D Playstation have more than one use

I'm hoping that someone that owns a 3D PlayStation can tell me if you can do more than play 3D games. Can you view photos taken in 3D?

Is there a site where you can download 3D files for the 3D PlayStation that are not games.

With my PS3, I've only used it watch 3D movies, and it works great for that.

Did you need an extra attachment to watch 3D movies with your PS3?

I'm not certain if you mean watch 3D movies on a 3D TV or on the VR headset that comes as an attachment.

VR headset?  So you mean the PSVR???

It does have a media player but it kind of sucks.  At least last time I tried it (maybe it's improved since then), the PSVR media player was limited to 1080p content.  1080p equirectangular 360 is garbage...  I'm not even sure if it does 3D SBS or VR180 video.

The Playmemories app detects and displays .mpo files on a 3D TV

The OP wasn't clear what he meant by "3D Playstation" but other comments strongly implied he's talking about PSVR.  Either way he is talking about one of the Playstation models.  No PlayStation console device has ever been 3D-specific, so he's either talking about 3D Blu-Ray support or the PSVR.  When I see someone say "3D Playstation" - I think PSVR.

Last I checked there was not any evidence anywhere in the PS4 system software of PlayMemories branding or any "PlayMemories app" on PS4...  I'll check again tonight.  There is a media player app for PSVR, but as I mentioned in my post, it has some severe limitations.

Yes the Playmemoiries was a PS3 app. I havent tried .mpo files on my PS4 - but I have a couple of 3D games which play fine.

Thanks Entropy512.

There does not seem much advance with 3D even with the leaps in Technology these days. Maybe its a case of waiting and hoping something worth while will be developed.

There's a possibility Sony may have removed the video codec size limitation in the PS4 Pro by now.

The problem was:  The original non-Pro PS4 couldn't decode 4k video, the Pro can, but the app was (last time I tried it) not updated to take advantage of Pro capabilities.

I've been using an Oculus Go for these use cases for a long time.

Thannks Entropy512.

There is a PS5 in Sony plans so maybe it will have many useful features including decoding 3D Blu-ray videos so the VR Gear can be used to watch them.

Sony do need to make their products as useful as possible to sell them. So the PS5 needs to be more than use a game machine.

I can watch 3D blu-ray movies with the PS3 on my Sony 3D 65” UHD TV.  I use Sony active shutter glasses.  Hope that clears it up.

Thanks Caver3d.

I have a PS4 but have not come across anything that suggests it can be done with a PS4.

Re: Does the 3D Playstation have more than one use

If Sony made their PSVR more useful then I'm sire it would sell better. At the moment it seems to be for only a few 3D games.

The other problem I have with the Sony VRPS is that it needs a cord from the person to the box and the cord has a limited length.
