Do you use the Top LCD on the EOS R?

I find the the Top LCD on the Camera very practical. But I don't see why it is really necessary, as you have all the Information in the Viewfinder or on the flip-out screen.

What do you think? Do you often use it? If yes, in what scenario?

I didn't even use it on my DSLRs.   The info on the rear screen is so much better.

I have been using the 1D series for years where the top LCD is more Integral to changing and confirming settings etc., Once you get use to a certain way of shooting/navigating your camera you tend to stick with what works for you. I also use the EOSR more for quick confirmation of settings. moving between modes and changing a few settings etc.  I have a lot of more settings map to buttons with EOSR and I tend to use the back LCD/EVF a lot more so the top LCD is used less.

I like having the Top LCD option though so I would like for that to remain in future R cameras.

It tells you which mode the R is in even when it’s switched off but that’s the only use I’ve found for it.

I find it useful when I first turn the camera on and am about to start shooting.  I can do a quick check of the settings, without the bother of looking through the viewfinder or at the LCD.

I use the top LCD as quick check of settings and is a habit I developed from my 20D days and the other DSLR's I've owned.  I could live without it but since it's there I will continue to use.

I agree. It's helpful to have it there just for a quick visual looksee to see what the current setup is. I don't object to its being there--information is useful.

It could be very helpfull if you don't use the screen (folded in)

when working on a tripod

So far I have only used it to pick which mode I am in. But it is a matter of getting used to it and using it more often. I think its more handy when the camera is on a tripod and you are looking down onto the top of the camera.

Do you guys pull the battery out when you dont use the camera?

Do i have to fear screen burn in when display is always on?

I wish there was an option to turn off the screen when cam is off

I pull it out only when it's going to be off for quit a while.

as for burning in the screen..... does you digital watch do that ?

it's the same kind of screen as my Suunto outdoor watches

No since it is difficult for my aging eyes to read and its lighting in inadequate--two of only 4 niggles that I have found with my R (I don't shoot video where reviewers thought the world was ending).  FWIW,  I did use it on my 5DIV, but it was larger and better illuminated.  OTOH, I have all of the information in the EVF, so to be, there is no insurmountable issue here.

I used to think this way with my DSLR however in practice I use top LCD on DSLR primarily. IMO, it uses less battery than the rear LCD screen.

I think on R, info. on EVF can provide richer info. or similar than what is on DSLR, the top LCD can be less important and perhaps is eliminated on RP.

A good point, as far as I know the organic LED (OLED) is the only one that has burned characteristic but not with pure electronic LCD/LED kind. So in this case, I think it is not the case to see the burned mark on R.

I don’t worry about battery consumption.  I always carry an extra one.   I don’t need the second battery often, but wouldn’t be without it.

I also shoot fewer pictures than many here.   If I did a lot of burst shooting for sports and wildlife, I would have to pay attention to battery life.

Great question.

I always use the top LCD to check the battery level when I pick up the camera to go shoot something.

Until a few weeks ago, I ignored the top LCD expect for battery checking. Then one day, I was shooting some long exposure bracketed images with a 10 stop ND filter that were about 4 minutes each using bulb. When using bulb, the back Live view screen goes black. I think that this reduces electronic noise for a cleaner exposure. Anyway, with the rear screen black, you don't know how long you have to wait for the exposure to finish. I also sometimes forget whether I turned on Bulb Timer, and wonder if the camera is just going to continue the exposure forever.

I had the camera on a tripod very low to the ground. I happened to look down at the top LCD during one of the exposures and noticed that there was a timer. Now, I can see how long the exposure has been if I'm concerned about whether I set the bulb timer.

It's just a little thing, but sometimes 4 minute exposures seem to last for days. 🙂 Now, I can check it by looking at the top LCD. Just another simple but nice feature that I have discovered with this camera.

As an aside, this is what I got in the end. Not going to win any prizes, but I like it and learned a lot in the process.

Nice photo

Having the timer on the top lcd is indeed an awesome feature which makes it quite useful! Thanks for sharing.

I did the math to answer a similar question about the top lcd on the R.

That thing is designed to be left on years, and the R battery can power it for thousands years. The electronics that handle the soft on-off function and the battery self discharge are orders of magnitude more relevant than that LCD.

I think you're creating an issue when there's none.
