Re: My Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D works again!

Clearly the Minolta was always going to be the winner !

( the Canon forum sez' the opposite ! )

I still use my 7d from time to time to keep it alive .

Good ergonomics , lovely output , a joy to use , shame it didn't have an extra 10 megapixels in it.....

Thanks for Sharing .

You have to look at the side of the Sony Alpha 900
for the continuation

Funnily enough , the Sony a900 is my main camera , used mostly with Minolta lenses .

A Dynax 7 film camera is probably my second most used camera , followed by a Bronica ETRSi and a 5"x4" Crown Graphic , and then the Sony a77ii .

And a load more other stuff as well , mostly film !

Hi mate, my 7d never died it has just been neglected

I freed it from its bag the other day and also the lens that came with it that I never used, the Tokina 19-35 F3.5/4.5. I already had the Minolta 17-35 F2.8/4 lens and never felt the need to try the Tokina.

Anyway I took the camera and lens for a walk through town and had some fun.

Still a great camera to use, mine has the vertical grip fitted so a large beast compared to my newer cameras, also a noisy fellow to as the mirror clunks away as you shoot. Still for web viewing the images still look fine.

I hope my 7d keeps running for a few more years yet as it fun to give it a spin every now and then.

Very happy for you that your copy seems to work properly. (Beautiful photos by the way)
You gave me the taste to find a vertical grip

Thanks mate, the vertical grip is very nice to hold, apart from taking two batteries you get an insert to run the camera on AA type batteries.

Here is a photo of my setup for you.

I just picked up the Sony 50mm f1.4 today. Brand new at half price, a local electrical store had it on clean out. Picked up the Sony 100 mm f2.8 macro lens last week for $348 Australian. Over a thousand dollars off retail

I just aquired the maxxum 7D and two lenses at a next to nothing cost. Interesting, it's old chronologically bit still very young with only a few thousand clicks. BUT, it wasn't working very well until I gave it a few whacks with my hand then, like magic, it works perfectly.

Careful. This was the first interchangeable lens camera with IBIS.

Very fragile IBIS.

If its not broken, then its possible to lube that system a bit to make it work and keep it working.

There might be still some specialists that can do that.

Usually, the kinds of things in cameras of this era that get "fixed" by a whack don't benefit from lubrication. The problem is usually "sticky" magnets - aperture, shutter, and/or mirror release magnets that are stuck latched, probably due to lubricant from elsewhere in the camera that has vaporized and formed a layer in the gap of the two latch pieces.

I have that info directly from repair guy that specializes on KM and later moved to Sony.

IBIS of KM7D can get stuck, which is why whack helped, but its temporary solution, which with each next whack will eventually cause IBIS to die, permanently.

And it gets stuck, cause IBIS itself isnt cleaned and then relubed, which is basically one only way to prolong its life.

All KM7D die eventually due design. Considering its design faults, its rather amazing some work (mine does too, well one of them).

Probably true, but CamilloAndrew didn't say what about it "wasn't working very well..." If it was the IBIS, then OK.

I have worked on Minoltas and Canons both that had such stuck magnets as I'm talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what causes FFB, too.

Re: My Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D works again!

FFB supposedly has multiple reasons, but one of solutions I know about is basically replacing mainboard. I think it has some other solutions too, but didnt really asked repair guy about it, since mine was that case. He just mentioned it can be due multiple things, its sorta error in design.

Interesting. The KM service documentation apparently said it was a problem in pressure applied to the shutter assembly: https://www.dyxum.com/columns/other/First_Black_Frame/First_Black_Frame.asp

Its possible too. As he said, there is more than one reason. Replacing almost new shutter assembly did nothing for me (I mean, apart having nearly brand new one).

It's not exactly the shutter, but the shutter charge assembly, which winds the shutter. Do you know if both were replaced, and whether the updated assembly was used?
