'Upgraded' from the GX85 to the GX8...
10

Ok I know feature wise the GX85 has a few things the GX8 hasn't got, but really the GX8 is something else, the build quality and feel is in another league, the GX85 feels insubstantial in terms of size (which I know most will prefer) and ergonomics imho, but the GX8 just 'sits' better. the buttons have a completely different feel in the way they move. I got caught in some inclement weather that came up quite unexpectedly, luckily I could cover the GX85 with my jacket an get out of there, problem was I would have liked to carry on with my walk and get a few 'dreary' shots, but couldn't.

Decided right there I need to get back to weather sealed (had a GH4 and that thing was a tank, went anywhere in any weather), but after upgrading that to the D500 for BIF etc, I needed a smaller carry around camera so got the GX85, and its been awesome, but twice over the last month I got caught with it in bad weather. So decided on the GX8, got it for an incredible price here in South Africa, it was like a $1000 when it launched here but got it for $600, which is a great price imho.

Saw a review which stated the GX8's AF is slightly quicker (for me I see no difference) both are very fast, but the one thing where the GX8 is better is AF tracking, not sure if its got a different set of algorithms etc. but its noticeably better.

Ok, seriously, the GX85 is great to BUT I have large hands and the GX85 just felt a bit too small, but the GX8 is just better for me.

I must state that I do no video so the video benefits of the GX85 don't bother me, in the last 4 years I've never used my cameras for any video.

No doubt GX8 is a premium class camera. But mirrorless is a highly technology driven product and as long as possible (budget and options), I shall look forward instead of backward.

If size of GX8 be of your satisfaction, and you need WR, might be a G85, which has all the latest hardware as GX85, be a better option?

I also like the ergonomics of the GX8.

You didn't mention the tilting EVF and fully articulated LCD: are these features you will use? I do frequently.

definitely, didnt think I would but its actually incredibly practical when shooting on the street/in crowds or you just need that angle.

and fully articulated LCD

Not so much for me, but have used it more than I thought.

There is no comparison between the GX8 and G80/85. I have them both. If it wasn't for the electro mechanical shutter and the focus bracketing feature on the G80, I would be using the GX8 all of the time.  The image quality of the GX8 is superior. It's the main reason why I use it for colour critical work. And at lower ISO I get far less noise from the GX8 pictures. Then there is that viewfinder image to die for. Even the mighty G9 can't beat the GX8 viewfinder.

Yip gotta admit that GX8 EVF is glorious, I was happy with the GX85's but the GX8's is simply amazing.

Congratulations!

From pancake primes to long zooms, the GX8 couples well with all of them.

To me, the GX8 OOC JPG images are readily usable, most of the times, with nice colours and contrasts.

On rare occasions, I wish it had a tiltable LCD (more discreet), but I suppose one cannot have everything!

I agree, and I like the smaller GX7 for those occasions, especially on the street.

A nice companion to the GX8.

Wanting to replace my three GX7s, I compared a G85 and GX8 in a store. Despite the technical refinements of the G85 (no AA filter, reduced shutter shock, etc.), I went with the GX8 for what might seem like minor reasons. First, the buttons on the GX8 are raised, whereas those on the G85 are flush and very difficult to find by touch. Second, my thumb could more easily reach and operate the "rear" dial on the GX8. Working quickly in dim conditions, I find these usability differences more important than stuff that shows up on the spec sheet. I also appreciate the slightly larger EVF on the GX8, and I prefer a "rangefinder" body type.

A True Gem.

Congrats!!! The GX8 was my favorite camera. The size was just right and everything was in the perfect spot. Weather resistance, range finder form factor, tilting OLED EVF, and one of the last Panasonic cameras to have an AA filter... it was a true gem and a joy to use!

The camera had major flaws that limited my personal workflow though: lack of live HDMI output while recording video, loud shutter made it hard to shoot discretely, lack of in body stabilization in video, to name a few. I ultimately traded it in hopes that they would release a true successor in the future... I'm still waiting.

Yes video wise it's not wonderful, but for stills wow!

Hallo Jostian, baie geluk

I also think the GX8 is a awesome camera. I read reviewers wrote the GX8 has shutter shock. I never had it on mine. If I compare it to the first EM5 which had a proper shutter shock, the GX8 is like a baby. The shutter on the GX8 has a lovely damped like sound, just does not make me think it will cause shutter shock....:-)

The EVF on the GX8 is also one of the best. the view is huge with straight sides. The G9 is also huge but the sides are curved, I am always irritated when I look through the G9 view finder. Good one readjust the G9 view finder....

What lenses do you use on the GX8?

I find the ruggedness and water resistance of the GX8 to be really good and it is a great outdoors camera .  I have had it for 3 years and have taken it on tons of adventures.  Usually just wear it around my neck as I hike around, or tuck it in a jacket. Coupled with a WR lens, it is pretty much worry free for me in inclement weather or damp conditions. I wouldn't dunk it obviously, but a little rain/snow on the camera wont bother it at all.

Enjoy your "new" camera, it's a gem.

Despite being fortunate enough to own well specified full frame and APS-C systems, the GX8 is my most used camera on my professional and personal outings. The features, speed and great IQ make it a winner for pretty much everything. On a shallow note, it's also rather handsome.

I thought the GX8 has in body stabilisation and a silent shooting mode?
