Choice of m43 camera

I'm looking for an upgrade to the GX7. I was thinking of the EM1 II but I managed to try one in a shop and I don't like the grip and the viewfinder looks weird - it seemed to have barrel distortion. Can that be adjusted? I also tried the EM5 II and actually liked it better. Felt better in the hand and the viewfinder looked better with no distortion. Is the EM5 II much of an upgrade from the GX7? I want the flipout screen and IBIS and a better viewfinder and a softer shutter. Also considering the G9 buy didn't get a chance to try one. Does that have a decent grip?

G9 ...

G9, cheaper than an EM1 II, at least as good, and I would say slightly better camera. Really a no-brainer with current pricing. I just got the G9. I have tried the EM1 in a store. Both are good. G9 has better EVF, better controls including an AF joystick. As a bonus it costs less, but even if cost were the same I would choose it over t he EMN1 II. The cheaper cost really is just icing on the cake.

The g9 does have some pincushion distortion in the VF if your are bothered by such things.  Apparently the Oly just distorts in the other direction.  The G9 VF overall is gorgeous and higher res than the EM1. You can easily choose from the 3 views where the area used shrinks down.  Handy if you wear glasses and need to see the corners.

I have a GX7 and later also bought the EM5.2 primarily for its IBIS.  However, once the G85 came out with a similarly-performing IBIS, I switched to it, instead.  I strongly prefer the ergonomics and menu layout of the G85, as well as its superior video.  The EM5.2's placement of the ON/OFF switch really irritated me, along with the fact that I couldn't use the back button AF and shutter release AF interchangeably.  I had to select only one of them from the settings menu.

Having said that, I do miss the Live Composite long exposure mode but it hasn't really affected my shooting since selling it.  Nor did I use its hi-res mode, either (I rarely carry a tripod, let alone a super stable one).

If you like the form factor of the GX7, then the GX85 and GX9 are the natural upgrades. The GX9 If you can, get your hands on a PenF to try as well, since it is a similar form factor.

If the form factor isn't too important, then consider an EM1ii or a G9.

I had a GX7 and use a GX8 now. Completely different camera, though. It's like an oversized GX7 with the beta features and hardware from the G9.

The EM5ii is a fine camera, but it's the same sensor as in the GX7. Same problem with the GX85 (and it's also a very good camera). If you're thinking of either of those, then just save your money and stick with the GX7 for another year.

I sold my GX8 and G85 two years ago. I was really hoping something like GX8 Mark II should be launched soon, and I was believing such expected camera should take all fine advantages from G85 and GX8, but in vain, it was only my dream...
I'm not able to understand why it's so, but it's clear Panasonic's marketing department holds a completely different point of view...

And recently I have bought the second-hand black GX8 looking perfectly like brand new just for $500. The shutter count does not over 2k.
And I'm so happy. GX8 is an absolutely fantastic camera with some minor technical issues which might be easy evaded if you know how it works beforehand...

Out of interest, what have you been shooting with in the meantime?

I'm the proud owner of the full-frame Sony A7RIII
It's technically absolutely perfect camera allowing to get fantastically detailed pictures,
but after I sold my Panasonic's toys I have been experienced hardcore nostalgia that tortured my soul till I returned back to M4/3.
M4/3 system namely GX8 is far to be so perfect technically but provides me with very special сharm, fun, and incredible feelings, I would call it a honey pleasure of shooting...

+1 for the G9

Yes it has a flipout (fully articulating) screen, yes it has excellent DUAL stabilisation, (not just IBIS), yes it has a great EVF, yes it has a soft shutter ...and it has a whole lot more features & capability (see loads of other posts about this camera).

By 'decent grip' do you mean the camera body itself? ...the standard G9 body has excellent handling and controls with a decent sized grip that accommodates all of my fingers ...but its overall layout & customisation is the most impressive.  I would say its the best that M43 has delivered to-date.  The G9 also has the optional/additional choice of an add-on 'battery grip' which duplicates the main controls to allow you to use it more efficiently in portrait-mode.

The G9 is easy to recommend, i have not found any issues with it and so am considering another as a second back-up body.

Exactly.

The GX8 has these various little flaws, so I have a hard time just telling people to get it, but I absolutely love the camera. I too am hoping for an eventual update in the same vein ... but to be honest, I still haven't finished reading the manual for the GX8.
