Replacement hoods for 50-140 & 16-55mm
1

Hi,

With Fuji's lens hoods being notoriously gimmicky does anyone know of good, metal hoods to fit the 50-140 and the 16-55 lens?

Thanks

Just be aware the screw on lens hoods can be more detrimental to your lens as opposed to the bayonet ones if they bang and buck too often.

They are not notoriously gimmicky, they are chatted about on the www by people who look to their gear's appearance rather than function.  (Aren't they?).  It is like short shutter releases, absurdly expensive straps and other similar stuff.

The 16-55 hood is as effective as any hood can be on a lens that goes out to 16mm.  Much bigger will vignette, much smaller is pointless.

Do you own either of those two lenses? I own both and I would say that they are a PITA to use. Not sure I would use the word "gimicky".

When reversing either hood for storage they tend to get off kilter with their threads and getting them to sit flush is always an issue. I think that's what was meant by "gimicky" Not "gimicky" in how they look, or the function they provide.

So, do you have any idea of good, stable, possibly metal replacement hoods? I'v done a search, I own several jjc hoods (much better than the originals) for 16mm, 35mm and the x100f, but I cannot find anything for the zooms. Thanks

I have the 50-140, I totally agree with you. It’s been like that since day one.

Yes, the 16-55, should have said when I framed my reply, as it was why I didn't comment on the other lens.  Apart from being a bit stiff to fit my Fuji lens hoods (all five, plus the two I've sold on) were perfectly OK and (and this is the key thing) designed for the specific lens.

WA to Tele - either no protection from flare at the long end or vignette at the wide end. For longer lenses you can use metal parallel hoods of various length, which is what I do unless space in my bag is at a premium, then the reversible hoods take up less space and do a decent job. Just take a second to line up the dot on the hood and they're fine. Metal screw-in hoods (complete with a hood cap) are fine if you have space to keep them attached while in your bag.

The original Fuji ones are relatively OK in terms of size and protection offered. But they are plastic, flimsy, you need force to attach/detach them... I was wondering whether anyone has laid their hands on quality metal hoods that emulate the original Fujis but are manufactured to a higher standard.

I've not seen the petal hoods in metal and I'm not sure the bayonet fit would be any less troublesome. They need to be bayonet rather than screw in to ensure they locate correctly and do not vignette at corner of frame. I actually consider the plastic petal hoods, though not ideal, to provide strong physical protection with enough "give" to bend and return shape rather than break. It seems to be something we are stuck I'm afraid, like it or not.

For fixed WA primes I too like the JJC square hoods. Did you say you had one for the 35mm f1.4?

I bought the B&W 960/72 metal lens hood as the replacement for the crappy plastic petal one on the 50-140. Slides easily into a lens pouch as it is no wider than the lens barrel. Looks like an old nikkor 200 f4 hood.

1 inch 72mm metal lens hood.

Original good too troublesome to store in bags... Must remove n reverse. This adds just 1 inch. Protects the front for knocks n rain drops. Flare wise I shoot into the sun alot so dunno how good it can be being so short.

For the 1655,the flower hood stays permanently there. Any lens hood u can find fit won't save much in size.

Does anyone know where to get the original plastic hood for the 16-55mm? I bought one used and it didn't come with it (this was disclosed in the description) but Fuji doesn't seem to offer replacements and B&H or Adorama don't have them either.

This may not help, but £14.99 on the UK Fuji shop I think.

Re: Replacement hoods for 50-140 & 16-55mm

I use my  Contax CY Metal lens hood 86mm to replace the Fujifilm one using step up ring from 77 to 86. It looks OK. You could still get it from E Bay.

By the way, you could also use this one for Macro 80mm or 100-400 just adding separate/each adaptor. In the case of 80mm  62-86 and for 100-400, also 77 to 86, The Contax CY provides its own step up ring for each lens such as 85mm Sonnar using 55-86 and then attach the 86mm hood or 85mm F1.4 from 67 to 86, Hope this help

This thread is kind of old...but there is a great lens hood for the 16-55 2.8 which I purchased off of E-bay. It is made in China but it is of high quality. It also comes with a great metal lens cap that fits over the lens hood.

It is on E-bay and the item number is 174661203701

I don't want to post the E-bay link as they often change.

Seems like a nice lens hood, but very pricey at $46. I'm a cheapskate though, so maybe that is just the going rate for lens hoods.

Re: Replacement hoods for 50-140 & 16-55mm

Yesterday I received a similar hood (Haoge) for the 16-55.

It did not work, , fit was poor. I was unable to make it turn all the way to the right place,..... ir would only turn for about 30 degrees, and then too tight, I am returning it.

By the way, I have 2 other hoods with similar design for Fuji lenses (35mm, 1.4 and 56mm 1.2) also from Haoge and they work well and I like them
