NX1000 for 35mm slide duplication?
1

I have an NX-1000 and am hoping to rig it for 35mm slide duplication.  The closest I have come so far is with a pentax-thread adaptor and an "accura zoom duplivar" slide duplicator.  I find that this creates a nice image but it cannot see the full 35mm frame.  Also, the slide is in focus but there is no focus control!  This suggests that it is a fixed focus arrangement, but designed for full-size SLR (or DSLR) cameras.  The half-size sensor on the NX1000 doesn't permit capturing the entire slide.

Is there some other rig that will allow me to get this done?

Thanks!

Steve

You're absolutely correct about an old "35mm" slide duplicator not being suitable for use on an APS-C sensor camera ... it just won't work unless you only want part of the frame.

There are various solutions available, depending on the quantity of slides you need to convert, ranging from an adapted shoe box (to hold the slide) and an extension tube or close-up lens for use with your camera, right through to a dedicated device to connect straight to your computer via the USB port (or SCSI if you've got it).

These devices range from the "home-user" to the "high-end", in price as well as capability. A basic unit will scan one slide at a time, a more advanced unit will allow you to load up a holder or magazine and can be used in a semi-automated fashion, which can allow you to be getting on with something else whilst the unit grinds away in the background.

Have a search on the internet for "budget slide scanning" to get an idea of what ideas and options are available.

For what it's worth, I use a Canon FS4000US dedicated slide/negative scanner, which effectively scans a full-frame 35mm slide or negative to a 20Megapixel (4000dpi) file, which has proved perfectly adequate for most purposes.

Good luck

The cheapest way is to use a legacy macro lens or a manual 50mm lens with 26mm of extension tubes (they usually come in 10mm + 16mm sets) that should provide 1:1.5 magnification you need.
Then you need to provide the light, but you already have already have that coverer, right?

Thanks for that. As the NX1000 was set up with a 20-50mm zoom, I imagine I can use that lens at 50mm, and put the extension tube between it and the camera. Then I will need to rig up a backlit slide-holding device, and be good to go? Sound right?

This one seems to be what you describe, yes?

I wonder how far in front of the lens the slide will need to sit?  Perhaps I can use the slide carrier from the duplicator I have here.

I have the same set and it works. As you are using a zoom, you can adjust the magnification by zooming, just beware that it works in reverse - largest magnification is at the wide end (but the distance is the smallest) and the lowest magnification is at the long end but you can move the slide farther away from the lens. This also means you need less tubes to achieve 1:1.5 at the wide end.
Also, while those extension tube do enable AF it's of very limited use as it covers only a several millimeters in distance.
Here is a great resource https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/macro-extension-tubes-closeup.htm

Edit - that lens is usually the best at the shorter focal lengths (20-35) but check your own copy.
